MORE RAIN and storms are expected today, after almost a week of showers and heavy downpours across parts of the island almost equalled the average rainfall for the month.
According to statistics provided by the Meteorological Service, the island has already received 86 per cent of its average rainfall for December, effectively within a three-day period. In certain areas, like Athienou and Kornos, rainfall surpassed the average for the whole month.
The average total rainfall from December 1 until December 14 was recorded at 91mm. The norm for December is 105.6mm.
Winter’s arrival was finally announced last Sunday, which recorded the lowest temperatures so far this year. Following the abrupt change in weather, temperatures are expected to rise slightly to 19 degrees Celsius today in the mainland, 20 degrees on the coast and nine degrees in the mountains. Along with showers and isolated storms, strong winds may also be felt in some places.
The next significant drop in temperature is expected Friday.
The rest of the week will follow in a similar vein with mainly cloudy skies and isolated showers and storms expected tomorrow and Friday. Saturday will remain cloudy with no substantial drop in temperature.
