SC extends UN mission in Cyprus. Turkey votes NO

Postby Lit » Tue Dec 14, 2010 9:36 pm

Security Council extends UN mission in Cyprus by a vote of 14 to 1 with Turkey casting the sole negative vote. Obviously, Turkey should not even be on the Security Council.

SECURITY COUNCIL – UNFICYP

The Security Council adopted by majority a resolution on Cyprus extending the mandate of United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for a further six months.

Fourteen members voted for the resolution and one (Turkey) voted against the resolution.

UNFICYP is made up of 859 military personnel and 68 UN police officers. It arrived in Cyprus in March 1964 after intercommunal fighting broke out between the island’s two communities.

The Turkish ambassador to the UN stated that all resolutions passed after 1963 as well as this one are not valid because there is no goverment on the island.Turkish perception of reality is quit amazing!!!!!!!!!

So Ban Ki Moon states UN Good Offices could be no longer in 2011. Now the UNFICYP extends until mid-year. Will 2011 be the year for Cyprus? Probably false hopes again although personally I think Ban Ki Moon will say negotiations are going as plan and the UN will support reunification so we must do what we can to help both communities and nothing will change UNFICYP will still be here :). But with elections looming in the South which will be held in May if I am not wrong this can be part of the strategy and part of that plan maybe Dimitris Christofias not being re-elected. So a new government in the South will force negotiations for another 2-4 years then it's North Cyprus elections. :)

I doubt Turkey is worried about that because the TCs are missing in the “TRNC” too! Image

It's been a long time since there was any reason to keep the UN military here. I don't know how much it costs to keep them here, but I'm sure that the UN could use the money in a better way somewhere else.
