What makes me laugh is when England might play an Eastern European country in a football match - and they think that Sait George is on their side lol.

Most english people don't even know the story of Saint George Source... the flag is a flag is a flag... Saints have nothing to do with it. Since Saint George was born in Libya, I don't see how anyone can claim him as 'theirs' anyway.

Libyan's can...or maybe even Greek's can, considering there were non-conquered Greek settlements on north Africa, dating back to before Alexander the Great.

Anyway, I heard Saint George was Galatian....but nobody knows for sure as the story of Saint George and the Dragon was told in many different versions accross the med.

Various stories exist about who Saint George was, but most recognise that he was a real person. The one that I know is that he was a soldier in the army of Diocletian, renowned for his bravery and a known Christian, not a good thing to be around Diocletian who was a pagan and regarded Christianity as an evil sect. It is alleged that during one campaign in modern-day Palestine (I guess it would have been Judea then), George scolded Diocletian openly for his cruelty against the enemy and resigned from the army in protest. For this he was tortured and beheaded.

Whatever his story, I believe that St. George is patron saint of England, Portugal, Catalonia, Russia amongst other places.

Saint Nicholas (aka Nicholas of Myra) is the patron saint of Russia, although there are some strange links; Saint George is the patron saint of the Russian Scout movement!

..and now back to discussion of the blog site!
