Mines

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Mines

Postby londoner » Mon Dec 06, 2010 6:44 am

FIVE FIREFIGHTERS and three vehicles were stuck in the buffer zone yesterday after one of the fire engines rolled over a mine which exploded.
According to Fire Service spokesman Leonidas Leonidou, the vehicles were fighting a fire in the buffer zone outside the village of Denia when the largest fire engine drove over a mine, causing damage to the vehicle.
“Fortunately, there were no injuries,” said Leonidou as it was the back end of the truck which set off the mine.

Its about time both sides spent the money required to get rid of these monstrous mines - surely an agreement can be reached on this.

The RoC has an active de-mining process. I paraphrase a few independent reports: filed in 2008; said there was no de-mining by the Turkish Armed Forces but the RoC had carried out mine action spending $147,260 in 2008. $485,000 of International money was spent in 2007. By July 2010, the remaining (RoC known) mined areas were around the villages of Trouloi, Potamia, Dali and Louroutzina. But, the contamination by the Turkish Armed Forces is unknown.

No excuses for Turkey not clearing its minefields and actively searching for any left-over ordnance. :(
