Turkish parties "blacklist" US diplomats after WikiLeaks reports

Turkish political parties decide to distance members from US diplomats.
Wednesday, 01 December 2010 17:01

The fact that Turkey has the biggest share in hundreds of thousands of US diplomatic cables leaked on Sunday has changed Turkish politicians' stance towards US diplomats, with political parties taking action to distance themselves from US diplomats.

Ever since Davut's book on his visions of Neo Ottomman grandeur was published here last year, scores of Greek commentators have been writing glowing comments about Turkeish diplomacy. In the end it seems the Turks are no different than other Balkanites, well not on all things anyway. The Turks manage to have infinite cynicism and accept as normal such things as multiple swiss accounts and other vices in their leaders and keep their mouths shut.

This wikileaks thing is a lot bigger than it looks. Cannot wait for all the documents to be revealed.

Erdoğan is a crook? The AKP is an Islamist party? My goodness me, the revelations never cease.

I was seriously contemplating starting another thread wıth a huge 'revelation' such as "Turkey has renamed Constantinople Istanbul - shock, horror", but thought the better of it.

I have started reading Hanef Avcı's book. Now these are indeed revelations, even though nothing comes as a great surprise. I think this book will interest you if you can hold of it 'down under'.

Thanks,Tim...My sister is visiting us from Ankara for the New Year, she will bring a copy...I am looking forward to reading it...

Seriously speaking, some of you might remember that I used to talk about Erdogan's hidden Islamic agenda, how he really had no intention of joining the EU,but was using the Cyprus impasse to blame the EU for not admitting Turkey...

I am having second thoughts about that...It seems that Erdogan is little more than a megalomaniac who thrives on power...He would do anything to hang onto power, even join the EU...He is simply out to make as much money and gain as much influence as he can,for a shot at the Presidency down the line, once he changes the political system to give the President executive powers the like of which has never been seen in western style democracies...

Erdogan is indeed naive in foreign affairs, and easily manipulated by the likes of Davutoglu...I used to think Davutoglu was harmless, but now I am not so sure...The general elections in Turkey(scheduled for June ,2011 if I am not mistaken) will be of vital importance for the future of democracy in Turkey...This in turn will affect politics and international relations in the region significantly...We live in interesting times indeed...

Bir, I remember having this discussion with you a while back when I stated that the reason why Erdogan wants to be in the EU, is to have protection by the EU for his Islamic movement from those within Turkey who are against his Islamic movement. You know, the Freedom of Religion thing that is one of the cornerstones in the Western Democracies. It wouldn't hurt his ego either to be the first Islamic leader to be in the EU with all other Islamic leaders putting him on a pedestal for his great achievement for being in the EU club.

The Turkish government is certainly getting paranoid. I guess this is what happens when you cross the Israelis:

Further deterioration in ties: The Israeli government initiated the massive WikiLeaks disclosure this week in the aims of pushing Turkey into a corner, a senior official in Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan charged Wednesday. "We should look at the countries that are satisfied by the leak, and Israel is very satisfied," said Huseyin Celik, the deputy chairman of Turkey's ruling party.

Celik, who also serves as the party's spokesman, said in a press conference that Turkey started to suspect that "the leak's main objective was to weaken the Turkish government."

Turkey's President Abdullah Gul already hinted Tuesday that the massive leak was the result of "systematic work." However, Gul and other government members refrained from directly naming Israel.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan received on Monday the Al-Gaddafi International Prize for Human Rights for his “distinguished service to humanity,” which he said will further encourage him to fight for human rights.

The Gadaffi Prize for human rights. Something not right there surely?
