Iranian Nuclear Scientist Killed In Bombing
A nuclear scientist has been killed and another injured after attacks on their cars in Tehran, Iranian state media has reported.
Iran claims its Bushehr nuclear plant is only used for peaceful purposes
Majid Shahriari, a member of the nuclear engineering faculty at Shahid Beheshti University, died while his wife, who was in the car with him, was wounded.
In a second, separate attack in the capital, nuclear physicist Fereidoun Abbasi was seriously injured. His wife was also wounded.
The scientists were targeted in two different locations by men on motorcycles who approached their vehicles and attached bombs to their cars, Fars news agency said.
Iranian state TV quickly blamed Israel for the attacks.
At least two other Iranian nuclear scientists have been killed in recent years in what Iran has alleged is part of a covert attempt by the West to damage its nuclear programme.
Iran insists its atomic programme is purely peaceful, but suspicions that it is seeking nuclear weapons have led to the imposition of several rounds of international sanctions by the UN, EU and the US.
It was not clear whether the two university teachers targeted in the latest attacks were directly involved in the nuclear programme.
Iranian officials have long claimed Western governments have funded covert actions aimed at destabilising the nation.
Leaked diplomatic messages published by WikiLeaks have revealed Arab rulers secretly lobbied the US to launch air strikes to destroy Iran's nuclear programme.
