UNESCO: Enhanced protection for Choirokitia ...

A United Nations committee tasked with safeguarding the world’s valued cultural heritage that might be threatened in times of armed conflict has granted enhanced protection status to three sites in Cyprus and another one in Italy, it was announced on November 26 2010, the UN News Service said.

The protection means that States cannot fall back on the argument of "imperative military necessity" for using or targeting cultural sites in times of conflict. It also obligates States to make intentional attacks against identified sites a criminal offence or to penalize use of such sites or their immediate surroundings in support of military action.

I don't think our Anatolian friends would comply. They don't respect any international law. The second step after slaughter and rape would be stripping national identity.

Are youlotenvisaging that the TA will march southwards? Give me a break will you. Paranoia at its best (or is it at its worst).

May the 'great power in the sky' protect Cyprus from further destruction. :x

I think the world has had enough of these destructive elements. How long to sit idly by and allow the most belligerent to destroy the most civilised? Perhaps UNESCO's plea is indicative that Turkish Expansionism is recognised; an early warning. What can we do? Save, dismembering Turkey?

Be grateful that Turkey has saved the greatest church in Christiandom for humanity. :?

Cant you come up with a sensible solution apart from 'dis-membering'. That will mean more bloodshed and suffering, but you dont care about that do you?

I beg your pardon? There were MANY "greatest" Churches, which firstly the Ottomans and secondly the Turks, destroyed!

Give us a break, Deniz. It wasn't through "Turkish mercy" but intervention from other nations which saved the few remaining treasures, if only by persuading the Turks they will enjoy revenue from tourists!

It's precisely because no one relies on "Turkish mercy" that such extraneous reminders to respect what can never be regained are having to be made.
