US Congressmen to fly direct to northern Cyprus
08/08/2005
Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides confirmed a report in the Cypriot press that members and officials of the US Congress are planning to fly to northern Cyprus on a direct flight to the internationally unrecognised airport of Tymbou, known as Ercan in Turkish.
Chrysostomides said that the government was aware of this flight for some time now and had taken action to try to prevent it both through the official channels of the Cypriot Foreign Ministry and Cypriot expatriates in the US.
"It seems that this visit will take place," Chrysostomides said, adding that this is an illegal and arbitrary visit and the government will submit its protest wherever necessary.
US officials have maintained in the past that there is nothing in US law to prevent direct visits to the north.
He said that the Republic of Cyprus is the sole sovereign state on the island and its sovereignty is internationally recognised.
The Spokesman added that the number of people aboard this flight is not known.
Asked if they will be welcomed by the US Ambassador to Cyprus, Chrysostomides said that such a thing would be contrary to the UN Security Council and UN General Assembly resolutions.
Regarding Foreign Minister George Iacovou's recent visit to Washington, Chrysostomides said that during his contacts in the US and with his US counterpart Condoleeza Rice, Iacovou "had all the good will to settle the outstanding issues for the creation of a friendly climate and a relation of understanding with the US government," adding that "this intention still remains."
He added that in the meeting between Iacovou and Rice many issues were raised such as the promotion of a climate that will bolster the cooperation between the two governments.
"All issues, even those that were not discussed, are implied in the framework of the broader friendly relations between the two countries," he added.
Asked about the US insistence on taking direct flights to the occupied areas, Chrysostomides said that "perhaps this is due to Turkey's influence on some US organisations that support this arbitrariness."
Since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the Cyprus government has declared illegal ports of entry all ports and airports in the island's northern part.
