Merkel: Ankara protocol MUST be implemented

Postby Lit » Fri Nov 26, 2010 9:24 am

Merkel hosted a meeting in Berlin in which she met with the representatives of Turkish press in Germany on Thursday.

Speaking at the meeting, Merkel said that the Ankara Protocol posed a problem in Turkey's EU membership process.

The Ankara Protocol must be implemented. We have to make progress in this matter. I will visit THE ROC at the beginning of 2011 and try to do what I can on this matter, Merkel said.

in being an observer of the cyprus problem, this is the first time since the cease fire in 1974, that turkey has been pressured this much to solve the cyprus problem. i dont really see how the turks expect to get what they want in a cyprus solution when all of europe is jumping on their back.

Turkey’s obligations

15 December 2010 10:04

BRUSSELS - Turkey's EU accession negotiations are entering a more demanding stage and their acceleration will depend on the fulfilment of obligations, namely the implementation of the protocol and the normalisation of Ankara's relations with Cyprus, the EU Council of Ministers concluded. Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou expressed satisfaction over the conclusions, which refer to the enlargement of the EU and all candidate countries.

An indication that the negotiations are at a crucial point is the fact that for the first time in four years, there will be no meeting for the opening of a new chapter.

The Belgian presidency of the EU had set the goal of opening the chapter on competition, which however will not be opened during Belgium's term, which expires on December 31.

After Cyprus' intervention, a reference in the conclusions that the opening and closing of chapters must be made on the basis of the acquis communautaire was removed.

If I had 1 euro everytime I heard 'crtical stage','the end','final'... I would be a rich man :)

I also believe EU has sent many deadlines in the past to implement the Ankara Protocol what you know nothing has changed and it will not change tommorow. But I have a little itch about 2011 we shall see.

There is no chance Turkey will implement the Ankara protocol with nothing in return. Turkey has stated many times open the ports in the North for direct trade/flights and the South will get it's flagged vessels/aircrafts to be allowed why not do a deal? The Ankara protocol is according to the Republic Of Cyprus well Turkey doesn't recognise RoC so why should it implement the protocol. Maybe EU should of thought about all this before accepting RoC into the EU not crying afterwards please implement the protocol.

can we lobby for this? We would all be filthy rich in 10 years time

ZoC, turkey are not a religious state...there is no official state religion as per constitution and religion is strictly prohibited in politics...it is a SECULAR state...you know, that word that keeps popping up any time turkey is mentioned...I don't mean to come across rude but please stop calling us out on our religion...If you hate muslims so much then go protest or complain or be a priest but stop bringing it up completely out of topic

Turkey is not a 'secular state'. It is 99% Muslim and the GoT pays the imams. It is headed by religious fundamentalists who wish to impose head-scarf wearing amongst other things. You are mistaking the oppression of other religions (Christian) for 'secularism'. Not so.

What's wrong Zoc you seem like a little boy or girl who wants everything but does'nt share anything. We call them spoiled brat. To me sounds like a good deal I can't see why you would reject it. We both get what we want :).
