I dont give a damn about Turkey politics but if Turkey was in the EU, would it not be easier to get Turkey out of Cyprus?
On the contrary. Today Turkey is a non EU country which occupies a big part of an EU member. This is a hostile situation against the EU itself and thus it is easier to tackle as such by the whole of the EU.
The foreign minister of Hungary should be ashamed of himself and so should all other EU officials as well as member countries for allowing Turkey to even discuss its admission, while occupying part of CY and not lifting the results of the ethnic cleansing conditions it has established on CY.
Turkey should first let go of the EU territory it holds illegaly and stop all hostile actions and all violations against CY and its people. And after it does that, it should recognize CY as a state, it should stop its threats against it and it should let Cypriot planes and boats use Turkish ports and airspace etc.
Then, it should let Cypriots come up with a new cinstitution of EU standards which will solve the internal part of the CY problem.
And after all the above have happened, Turkey will have to make all the internal reforms which will change it into truly European and democratic country before its admission to the Union is even considered seriously.
PS. Turkey will never make these reforms because if it did, it would colapse overnight. Just think of the 25% Kurds and their rights and claims, the Alevites etc. Suleiman Demirel (I think even Ozal) had admitted this some years back.
Therefore, Turkey will never become a full EU member. It simply can not afford the consequences.
Neither can the EU.
Can anyone imagine the Europeans accepting to host tenths of millions of Turkish workers and inhabitants in Europe? What a nightmare.
