Early application of divide and rule

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Early application of divide and rule

Postby Talisker » Tue Nov 23, 2010 1:14 am

In the nineteenth century European powers employed "natives" perceived to be inherently "martial" as the mainstay of their imperial armed forces. This theory of "martial races" undergirded the composition, for example, of Britain's Indian Army. An attempt in the 1890s to apply "martial races" theory to the formation of an indigenous defence force in Cyprus, however, proved to be an unqualified failure. Although the British government claimed that the scheme fell through because of inadequate funds, the main reason was that the decision to recruit the force exclusively from among the presumably more "martial" Turkish Muslim population of the island contradicted local ideas of identity by dividing Cypriots into "Greeks" and "Turks," with unhappy consequences for the future.

Varnava, A (2010). Journal of Military History 74: 1047-1067.

First I'd heard this happened so early......

Around that time, the islanders were simply called Cypriots and this invariably referred to what we now regard as 'Greek Cypriots'. In those days, the term 'Greek Cypriot' would have been used for someone who had one parent from another part of the Hellenic fold and the other as a Cypriot (much as I and Nikitas are today). The "Cypriot" reference was never applied to the Turkish minority who were regarded as foreign to Cyprus (being a Greek Isle). 'Cypriot' was equivalent to calling someone Spartan or Athenian or Thebean. These were all provinces of the Hellenic fold. The Turks were, and are, foreign to Cyprus. The term "Turkish Cypriot" is a modern anachronism or oxymoron ...

Although Greek Cypriots can continue to refer to themselves simply as 'Cypriots', the same could not be said for Turks. They are either Turks or at best "Turkish Cypriot". Used alone, "Cypriot" can ONLY apply to the majority, who happen to be Greek Cypriot. :D

Of course, there are other latter day Cypriots (more worthy than Turks) who call themselves Armenian Cypriots, Maronite Cypriots, British Cypriots etc ...

I am glad you responded to this lonely thread, but ...

Doesn't Talisker already know your views on the subject?

I've learned something - you are not the only REAL Greek Cypriot on the forum, there is one other!

Talisker, don't take any nonsense from this debate-stifling, googlefarting forum TROLL.

She/He is so behind the times and lonely, she/he resorts to digging up out-of-context quotes from years ago for her/his self-gratification obsessions. His alternatives are Turkish partitionist propaganda. All in all ... death to threads

We ALL already know HER/HIS views on everything, from TURKS to TOILETS, but it doesn't seem to stop her/him spreading and spreading her/his daily propaganda ...

While you are with the times and multiple,I presume...

Thank you for telling me that I was simply a "Turkish" minority for over 400 years in Cyprus...You'd have more credibility if you used GR's term "Ottoman remnants" because there was no nation called "Turkish" before 1923...You should write a new version of How to win Friends and Influence People,Oracle..You can show us how best to insult people, deny their identity, vilify them, and want them to come and live with you in a Unitary state, in peace and harmony...

as for Cypris being a Greek Isle, I suppose it depends on you definition of Greece, but geographically Cyprus is a part of Asia/Africa, being on the plate boundry,, where as modern day Greece is mostly European, (not sure where the true geograhical boundry runs down the Aegean) and politically should be (and would be but for the unlawfull ocupation of the North) completelyindependent.

Long live the republic of Cyprus

Get a few of your politician friends to start slipping it into Legislation and EU meetings! :D

Perhaps, rewrite the Constitution ....

Can I go down in the annals for inventing the verb "Googlefart"? (The action of mentally deficient trolls who feel obliged to reply to everything with a googled quote.) :D
