Definition of 'Greek Cypriot'

Postby Gasman » Sun Nov 21, 2010 11:12 pm

Have just been reading that you are not strictly a Greek Cypriot unless one of your parents is Greek and the other is Cypriot?

I thought the term referred to the language spoken. And had read that it was the Brits who first started referring to Cypriots as being either GC or TC?

I suggest you read the Constitution of the RoC.

Must I? Not tonight methinks. I read it on this very forum. This forum is the authority on all things Cyprus isn't it?

All clearly explained by Chimera on this thread (probably longer than the Constitution)

Crux of their argument is ...

Are you Greek Cypriot because one parent is Cypriot and the other Greek?

---

Unless you have parents from Greece and Cyprus, kindly refrain from calling yourself a Greek Cypriot and further clouding the waters.

lol! My second post of the evening!

I thought you were busy putting the world to rights with yourself - err, I mean Talisker. Bashing the Brits from the UK!

So what say you about the Greek Cypriot label then? Wearing your Oracle hat of course.

Mind you as you insist Cyprus is Greek - I suppose if both parents came from Cyprus that would qualify

Are you thinking of becoming one?

As I said TROLLING, out of context.

The British called "Cypriots" all those people who were native, Greek speaking Christians and the rest they merely called "Turkish" without using "Cypriot".

So Cypriot referred to what we now call Greek Cypriots and Turkish to what we now call TC. Unless of course you happened to be Greek Cypriot because one parent was from mainland Greece.

Seems she's got it in for Scots, too!

Now crawl back in your hole TROLL, the forum has been getting along great till you turned up.

Change your sources because you've been reading a lot of bollocks lately!

A “Greek Cypriot” is just a label or classification if you like, of Ottoman origin. In the eyes of the Ottomans there were just three types of people on Cyprus…

1. Eastern Orthodox were regarded “Greeks”.
2. Muslims were regarded "Turks"
3. Catholics were regarded "Latins."

Thank you Gasman for re*postıng that lınk. One thing that I noticed was the language. Not one swear word. How nice. (at least on the first half of the thread). Good old days. Even Chimera was almost polite.
