A puppy laid and wept on the ground beside the fire site without eating and drinking waiting for its owner to return in Shanghai on Nov. 15.

A Golden Retriever puppy has deeply moved citizens in the aftermath of the huge fire that broke out on Jiaozhou Road in Shanghai killing 53 people on Nov. 15. The puppy laid and wept on the ground beside the fire site without eating and drinking waiting for its owner to return, according to a report by the Oriental Morning Post.

According to the report, the puppy kept walking back and forth near the fire site in the wake of the fire disaster and looked very worried. Several hours later, it was so tired that it laid still at a crossing and was trembling. Nearby residents estimated that the dog's owner was likely trapped in the huge fire, and firefighters covered the dog with a blanket and provided it with some rice, vegetables, bread and water.

However, the dog neither ate nor drank, and had tears running down its face. A resident wanted to temporarily adopt the dog and touched it, but the dog immediately growled and glared at the resident. After resting, the dog stood up and walked around the burning building again. After the dog became a little more relaxed, a firefighter at the site temporarily adopted the dog.

Citizens left messages on the forum of the pet Web site mypethome.com to search for the dog's owner. A firefighter from then Shanghai Jing'an Fire Fighting Squadron said the dog's name is Jingjing and had waited for its owner near the fire site before becoming so tired that it nearly passed out on the ground while watching the burning building. Jingjing was very dismayed and ate nothing after it was temporally adopted by a firefighter.

At noon on Nov. 17, Jingjing's owner went to the fire fighting squadron base, and Jingjing immediately ran toward its owner. The firefighter who adopted the dog said, "This man must be the dog's owner." Jingjing did not eat anything for 40 hours until it was reunited with its owner.

How sweet. My Labrador won't take food from strangers either.

Anyway, reminds me of the true tale of Greyfriars Bobby, the little terrier who guarded his (deceased) owner's grave for 14 years. :D

Perhaps if someone were to untie it from that tree he’d be on his way!

Can we stop having empathic dog stories?

(Fedexman ... sorry you are suffering)

Inci (pearl) my whitish and greyish moggie will be put to rest today at 10..am. She was the champion mice catcher of the whole area. But why oh why did she have to bring the live ones indoors - to show our other cats her prowess I suppose.

She lived long enough and survived a spell of pet poisonings in our area but age caught up with her.

Inci looks a wise one deniz, I have a ace mouser/ratter/reptile and the odd dead bird hunter now, his name is Milo :) , he is just a young un :) and brings the wildlife indoors  but his uk predecessor lived until 21 and always ignored rodents  somehow it was beneath him to catch his supper. Sad day when you realise that they need to end there lovely little lives, I vowed when I came to live in Cyprus I would,nt do it again but it took just a few months and I found one, and then another... :? I just feel cats calm me down, very tactile animals, but you never own them do you, they totally own you.

You have got at least one thing right - calming down. How else would one survive the goings on the cf. The idiots would drive you crazy if it wasnt for the sedative effects of our little furry friends.
Inci (pronounce Inji) always made me laugh as she attempted on three occasion to drag wood pigeons through our cat flap. Once the poor pigeon was alive and we caused havoc trying to catch it.
