Ironically, Mr Chirac's new-found concern for Cypriot sensibilities goes further than that of the Cypriot or Greek governments, which have both agreed not to block the start of Turkish accession talks on Oct 3.

Cyprus and Greece want talks to start, as they both believe that continuing talks offer their best chance of securing major concessions from Ankara.

France and even the Germans are exploiting the Cyprus issue. It is hard to say whether this will result in a positive or negative outcome for the Cyprus Problem. If Turkey recognizes Cyprus it is faced with an admission that it is illegally occupying a sovereign nation.

Cyprus is enjoying the support whether it is bona fides or or not. [/i]

Putting pressure on Turkey in respect of Cyprus is in reality a test to see whether Turkey will cooperate and jump when told to jump. I am unsure whether our friends in the EU consider the Cyprus issue a problem. The EU wants to mold Turkey into an obedient country. Cyprus was made to jump through alot of hoops before it was admitted into the EU as well- and it is still kissing ass diplomatically-I mean it was one of the few countries to support the EU constitution and it refrained from using its veto power.

If and when Turkey is admitted into the EU it will be a very different country just Cyprus is a very different country from the country that began accession negotiations with the EU.

By not exercising the veto early I think Papadopoulos put Turkey's head into an EU vice which is slowly being turnedd by every ugly EU son of a bitch with relatively little effort by Greece and Cyprus.
