He said a whole lot of nothing! Hmmm....

http://english.cri.cn/6966/2010/11/19/2681s605845.htm

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Thursday said that the Cypriot leaders had "constructive exchange of views" in the UN-backed Cyprus peace talks, held at the UN Headquarters in New York, and both the Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders agreed to work in partnership in order to move the stalled peace process "decisively."

The secretary-general made the statement to the press here at the end of the one-day talks between Greek Cypriot leader Mimitris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu.

Ban and the two Cypriot leaders held their hands together before the press after the secretary-general read a statement. The three did not take any press questions.

Alexander Downer, the UN secretary-general's special adviser on Cyprus, was present at the closed-door peace talks.

Downer said early this month that Ban invited Christofias and Eroglu to the UN meeting because he wants to "hear face-to-face with the leaders" what the prospects for a peace deal are.

well if he was thats no suprise the anglo-americans would make sure of this.but at the end of the day turkey and the t/c must know even if BAN threatens to pull his good offices and security detail out of cyprus he needs to get security council approval which ofcourse with russia and france yielding vetos you now what that means.

Summing it up:

Agreement not to answer questions because of sensitive nature...

Alternative to agreement might be formal partition...

Turkey bid to join EU hampered...

EU-Nato co-operation stymied...

Discussions stalled due to GCs demanding extra territory...

'Goodnight Nurse' comment mentioned again...

UN could withdraw from hosting talks...

Cypriot leaders agree to intensify contacts to advance peace talks

Fri, Nov 19 2010 07:44 CET

The leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities agreed on November 18 2010 to intensify their contacts to advance progress in the United Nations-backed talks aimed at achieving a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue, the UN News Service said.

The talks have been going on for some time "without clear progress or a clear end in sight," UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said following the meeting at UN Headquarters in New York with Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu.

"The peace talks on Cyprus were losing momentum and needed a boost if the two sides are to reach a settlement while there is still the time and the political opportunity to do so," he told reporters. "Only the leaders can give it that boost."

Ban said that the leaders agreed to intensify their contacts in the coming weeks "in order to establish a practical plan for overcoming the major remaining points of disagreement."

It was also decided that Ban and the leaders would meet again at the end of January in Geneva.

"In the meantime, the leaders will identify further convergences and the core issues which still need to be resolved, across all chapters. That, in turn, will help the United Nations determine its own next steps."

The two leaders have been meeting periodically with the aim of working towards "a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation with political equality, as defined by relevant Security Council resolutions."

That partnership would comprise a federal government with a single international personality, along with a Turkish Cypriot Constituent State and a Greek Cypriot Constituent State, which would be of equal status.

The core issues in the negotiations, which were launched in 2008, include governance and power-sharing, economy, European Union matters, property, territory and security.

"I hope today’s meeting has helped to restore momentum to the process," said Ban, who follows the negotiations through his Special Adviser for Cyprus, Alexander Downer.

"The people of Cyprus and the international community want a solution, not endless talks."

A UN peacekeeping mission, known as UNFICYP, has been in place in Cyprus since 1964 following an outbreak of inter-communal violence.

Particularly like the point about equal status of the two states and demand for a solution not continuation of endless talks that the GCs want.

Notice how it was worded and that it did not say "equal status of the two communities"!

Federal states are always of equal status, as they are in the USA and many other True Federations around the world.
