It's spam or spoofing emails. From-spoofing - difficult to stop them coming through altogether, but make sure your email controls are tight. 'From address' doesn't mean much in spam.

You can report phishing emails here if you can be bothered:

And you can google 'from-spoofing' to find out more about it.

I am not worried about them coming through, what makes my blood boil is to see my business e-mail address spoofed by spammers, or even worse scammers. This besmirches the name of my own business, which is entirely reputable and above board, and apparently there is absolutely no action one can take to stop it.

tim go here
http://www.mailguard.com.au/

it will cost AUS$10 per month per email address...guaranteed not to be spammed or spoofed...

but i am not sure as you need to get it from a reseller...email them and ask them...
or
maybe look at an alternative service like cloud...and let them worry about your email security...again it will cost and you need to go through a reseller...

I think you are still missing the point. It is child's play to spoof another person's e-mail in scams and spams - you simply enter that hapless individual's e-mail address as the sender. I don't care about receiving spams and scams that much, in fact, when I get the time I have a bit of fun doing scam baiting. What annoys me is not that I get this stuff, but that other people get this stuff purporting to come from me. This is defaming my character and that of my business and I find it to be outrageous. The kind of remedy or sanction needed here is not in the form of software, but an effective international treaty with teeth that permits people to take action against scammers in other countries who impersonate them. For example, I know the name and address of the scumbag in Minsk who was sending out vast numbers of job scam e-mails purporting to come from my business e-mail address, and thus casting aspertions on the legitimacy of my own business activities, but there is damn all I can do about it as things stand.

It is not always your computer that has been hacked and address book that had been pillaged to provide spoof senders details': by contacting one alleged sender of a scam/spam message (who I did not know) we worked out only had one person we knew in common and that person must have been the source of the email addressess.

We also found out that other people had got the same bit of junk but supposedly from different senders.

However once they have the email adresses the junk can then come from anywhere.

Can anyone recommend a good product to protect one machine?

BTW the "we want to give you lots of money" scammers have now resorted to new method of inviting the unwary to be conned - I got one such invitation by post, from Tanzania.

Precisely, the sender of an e-mail you can enter any name and e-mail address they wish as the sender. Anybody who advertises their services on the Internet becomes an automatic target - they just get your e-mail address from your website and claim to be you.
