The show a little respect for Cypriot developers/Lawyers thr

Postby RichardB » Wed Nov 17, 2010 10:37 am

In response to a few recent threads villifying Cypriot developers/Lawyers/General Cypriot populace recently

I thought it time to start one for forum members to give voice to defend the honour of the aforesaid

Whilst appreciating the genuine grievences of some I am sure there are far more members who have had trouble free purchases and dealings with these people.

I have purchased 2 properties trouble free ( 1 new and one resale) and found no particular problems with either.

I have also recently (in the last 6 manths ) had dealings with a lawyer regarding an unsettled bill dispute with a well known Nicosia hospital.. I must say that dispute was also settled very amicably.

in no cases did i have problems because I am a Brit

So please show your support for this nuch maligned section of the cypriot people

Honour? Is there honour and respect attached to being a builder or property developer?

The one that built most of the apartments round here was a plumber not many years ago - where else but Cyprus could you become a 'property developer' magnate in a few short years because you don't have to have any money of your own to start up with?

There is a big difference in the experience of people buying 'resales' and 'off plan' but until recently, there were hardly any resale properties available in Cyprus. Almost all were new.

Those who are honest should be the ones standing up to the crooks in my view. So they don't all get tarnished with the same brush. We don't hear a word of condemnation from 'decent ones' about the crooks do we?

As for the lawyers - it was only very recently that for the first time ever, one Cypriot lawyer took on another and successfully won compensation for the buyers of a property over here. Perhaps if more of those stood up to the rogues that would improve the overall image of the profession here. There are enough lawyers to go round in Cyprus that the bad ones wouldn't be missed. I read it has one of the highest ratios of lawyers to population of anywhere. Trouble is, because of the surplus, a lot of them have no practical experience at all.

People do seem to be realising they need personal recommendations for 'independent' lawyers. Now that it has become publicised that most of them were working for the developers too.

If it weren't such a small island, this would be no worse than a crooked builder or lawyer problem anywhere else. But the number of cases of people who are now in deep trouble over this seems disproportionate. If those found guilty or very dubious were stopped from practising it would help. As I said, they wouldn't be missed - one thing Cyprus is not short of is property developers/builders and lawyers.

Just as in any country if you have the vision and the entrepeneural skills and are willing to take a chance on the property market, money may be made - is that a problem.

Dont really see the relevance of this to the thread

Dont see the point of these above comments on this thread - As stated it is for people to give thier views and experiences from a satisfied/positive perspective

Richard, I am pleased that you have had 'no trouble' so to speak; it is always good to hear positive outcomes.

Correct me if I am wrong but you have a Cypriot wife yes? Did she assist you? Do you think that her being Cypriot and maybe having the right contacts helped?

What do you suggest others (non Greek speakers) can do in order to experience the same happy endings?

Not dealt with any Developers (yet) but the lawyers/doctors/cops/shop assistants/women/men etc. are all jolly good! :D

(... actually, it was a British Developer (in Cyprus) who left me cold to the idea of "new". :?)

Oracle dearest; had you know how to respect why do you use corrupted names. The Ladys' name is Gasman. Another appointment with the opticians is called for.

Before you blow your top, I defend all where needed.

Aren't there 100,000 Cypriots without title deeds?

Anyone without deeds, even if there is no toxic debt owed on their properties, is a potential problem of varying degrees. If the developer goes bust you may be asked to pay his debts to officially own what you have already paid for.

Would you ever consider paying someone elses back taxes in the UK? Or even be asked to?
