not a very respectful response

There is an old Irish adage............ "Never expect more from a pig, than a grunt !"

The trouble is some do not enjoy self respect but self-love (Philautia) which as Philosophers reported makes them blind to their own faults: however lacking self respect they probably cannot respct others.

Which is why we should ALL give the matter some serious consideration my friend.

There is no benefit in exhibiting one's ignorance, 'Respect' for others MUST increase one's 'Self Respect' since the latter attribute grows out of practising the former.

  You may be sure Richard B, that had I received the pm anonymously you would be among the last I would suspect of sending it.

As to the purpose of my creating this thread, I thought that by drawing attention to the meaning of the word 'Respect' (which has many connotations) I might awaken the desire in some members to consider them.

For example, in ANY society there are specific codes of conduct or religious tenets which determine how the members of that society act.

The fact that one society may differ quite dramatically from another (and we may use OURS as the yardstick) does little to indicate which is the better or best.

Therefore, one must study the amount of 'Respect' AND 'Self Respect' that exists in other societies and compare them to our own in order to form an honest opinion.

Quite frankly, having travelled extensively and observed the cultures of many societies in the world, I find it hard to accept that the West can lay claim to being THE society most deserving of 'Respect' in comparison to others.

The turmoil in the world (coupled with the lack of 'Respect' in so many areas of Western society) is surely a testament to the fact that it is not.

(IMHO) of course.
