"Leading party AKEL’s spokesman, Stavros Evagorou, said such racist and xenophobic behaviour was new to Cypriot society and needed to be combated at the root. He also called on the police to act with more determination in such situations."

New? I read that they moved it to Larnaca because there was less likelihood of trouble that they'd previously had in Limassol.

Obviously the football related violence in Cy doesn't count.

There is also the question of why the migrant support group KISA were allowed to hold a festival on the same day, time and place as an earlier planned march by nationalist groups to protest illegal immigration.

In the UK, such dual protests are banned, say between Muslim activists and English nationalists, or between Muslims who wish to protest at events in support of the British army, because of the likelihood of violence.

Maybe the Cypriot authorities should learn from the UK in whether to allow protests where one group chooses to demonstrate in the presence of others whose views they oppose.

Crap. If they want to fight then there are public order laws to deal with that. It's not the role of the authorities to assist them in having a fight.

idiotic mayor who decided to give out permits to 2 opposing groups holding a gathering at the same place on the same day.

I'd like to see what would happen if this new English nationalists Group which currently seems to be growing at an alarming rate, held a gathering on the same day and place as a group of Muslim Fundamentalists.

Yes. I agree with much of the above.

They don't have to 'go looking for trouble' when it is widely publicised for them where they can find it.

Where did you read that? What I read is that they moved it to Larnaca at the same day and place with the march because they wanted confrontation.
