(Knowledge of Cypriot is required to understand this story)
This actually happened in 1985 during a 10-12pm guardpost shift at the roadblock leading to occupied Tymbou.
A very funny character we used to call “To Pelendri” for obvious reasons, was standing guard at this post when a Land Rover approached, pulled over and the “Dikitis” (Battalion commander) stepped out to conduct an “effodo” (surprise guard inspection). The guard pointed his gun in the Land Rover’s direction and this conversation followed…
To Pelendri: “Altisin!!!” (Meaning “Halt! Who goes there?”)
Dikitis: “Na fais tin misin!”
To Pelendri: “Ooooo, kirie Dikita ise adikos!”
Dikitis: “Giati pedi mou?”
To Pelendri: “Tin allin missi bios enna din fai?”
Dikitis: [unable to compose himself staggers back to the Land Rover!]
