I agree with apc2010 there are pros and cons. I have been here for ten years and consider it the best thing I ever did. Just remember to use common sense in everything you do and be prepared for the fact that this is not Europe and there is only a thin veneer of civilisation.

I'm not so good with maps! Approx where is that island of yours? Middle East? Africa? Oceania?

The low tax, cheaper rent and lax employment laws make running a business easier than many other places. Internet speeds are not world class. An online business is an ideal business to set up in Cyprus as you will not have to rely on selling to Cypriots. What do you sell online? Canned pickled ambeloboulia (song birds)?

I am British and am in a line of work that can in theory be conducted over the Internet from anywhere in the world that has a decent communication infrastructure. I set up here shortly after Cyprus entered the EU and can assure you that this is a very business friendly place with light regulation and a simple tax structure. It is very easy now for an EU national to settle here and start their own business, once you spend a few weeks going through the bureaucratic formalities, and no real hurdles are placed in your way. Like all small islands, Cyprus is a very clannish place and people here do not like to see foreigners poaching on the territory of established local businesses. As long as you are not doing this, in my experience, you are welcomed with open arms.

PS - One snag may be that the VAT threshold here is very low and you will almost certainly have to become VAT registered, whereas in the UK small one-person businesses most often can remain VAT exempt.

merrytraveller is stating facts, whats your problem? I can spend £5000-£10000 and buy myself a title like LORD, but Id be silly to think I really was one. The same applies to you, you are not Europens and most importatntly you are not CIVILISED.
