Whats on the flight departure board only indicates where the flight eventually is ending up. I doubt anyone will make too much fuss about that. It is ONLY information. This is typical with "direct flights", meaning no plane change along the way. However, the flight plan filed by the pilots to meet the regulations and to satisfy the insurance company, is ONLY from Stanstead to Istanbul. What the pilot does after reaching Istanbul's air space is no concern of the British Civil Aviation authorities or the insurance company. My understanding is, that if the plane were to go down, God forbid, somewhere between Istanbul airspace and Ercan without first landing in Istanbul for no good reason, such as bad whether all over Turkey, which then the plane is forced to fly all the way to Cyprus to make a landing, I doubt the plane or it's passengers are insured, since the original flight plan was to go to Istanbul. That's the kind of "fly by night" operation I would not dare to put myself into. It's not for the passengers themselves so much, who may very well end up getting killed, but what about their surviving family members to get compensation from the airlines and the airlines insurance company.! My belief is, they will be denied any compensation, unless the plane first lands in Istanbul and then another flight plan is filed and that separate flight having it's own separate insurance coverage different from the one on the London-Istanbul leg.
