BirKibrisli,

I was referring to the fact that you inserted the word "ONLY" into my comment when you quoted me. I did not say ONLY Greek Cypriot aspirations - you inferred that is what I meant. Why are Greek Cypriot concerns about our human rights seen by you as an attack on Turkish Cypriots? It's as if all you concern yourselves with is your rights at our expense: your right to carry on living under the Turkish jackboot, your right to deprive us of our land and property and your right to restrict us from moving and living freely around the island.

Do you know how absurd it is to hear you endlessly whine about your rights when what you really mean is to deprive us of our rights? Think about how an unjust and unworkable solution like the Annan Plan would've poisoned the relations between the two communities and how 80 per cent of the population would resent you for it. Turkey would've been happy but on the ground it would've been a recipe for chaos and strife. Thank God we had the foresight that it never came to that. It's in your interests to have a solution that would meet our aspirations for a truly unified state. Not Turkey's aspirations for a formal partition.

So when we express what we want it's time you listened because G/Cs have legal and sovereign rights which are now formalised by EU membership which we are not prepared to give up. These rights are for all Cypriots in case you've forgotten.

Thank you Hermes, that sums up Birk nicely. And dare I say many TCs here on this site.

Bravo re.

EU expects Turkey to contribute to Cyprus solution

November 09, 2010

The European Commission expects Turkey to contribute in a positive manner to efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, Angela Filote, spokesperson of EU Commissioner on Enlargement, has said.

Filote also said that the EU does not confirm Turkish press report about an initiative by the European Commissioner on Enlargement Stephan Fule to unblock negotiating chapters in Turkey’s accession course.

“What I can say is that Mr. Fule monitors closely developments, he is in contact with all the parties involved in the Cyprus question and is available to them to help the negotiations”, she added.

It is no secret, she added, that the Commission supports the negotiations in Cyprus, aimed at finding a solution to the problem.

“The Commission expects Turkey to contribute towards that direction. The Commission believes that if a solution is found, it would be in the best interest of Cyprus, the EU and Turkey as well, because it will lead to the acceleration of the Turkey’s EU negotiation process”, she concluded.

Turkish newspapers have said that Ankara would be willing to allow flights by Cypriot aircraft in its air space and open its ports to Cypriot interest ships carrying the flag of a third country in exchange for the opening of Ercan illegal airport in Cyprus’ northern Turkish occupied areas.

Turkey does not recognise Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. Peace talks are currently underway, under UN auspices, to find a negotiated settlement to reunite the country under a federal roof.

Perhaps it would be more convincing if that said 'categorically denies'? Or even that it was a complete fabrication or even wild speculation?

I have a feeling it's related to one set up by some persons with Turkish sounding names a few years ago which then morphed into this slicker, pseudo-EU information site. It has a tendency to report similarly in style to some of the Turkish newspapers. Always the same kind of suggestive, preemptive, sowing seeds of dissent type stories, in Turkey's favour.

Maybe some bright spark can check back its history and analyse some of its articles more meaningfully, in terms of numbers and topics.

"Cyprus has also indicated some flexibility. The country's president, Demetris Christofias, outlined a proposal on 11 October that could speed up the island's reunification talks by opening the port of Famagusta, which is now a ghost city, to international trade."

If you consider that paragraph, the article is not unbalanced. Euractiv PLC is a British company that has a European-wide network focusing on EU issues. http://www.euractiv.com/en/Fixed/about/company.htm

Not so sinister :)

Having read more about euractive, i think they'd be horrified at Oracle's suggestion...they pride themselves on editorial independence :)

There are certain protocols and niceties that needs to be followed when dealing with international politics and politicians. What did you expect Filote to say, that the Turkey's chief negotiator Egemen Bağış is a liar.??

No and that's not what I said. Just if it said it was 'denied' would have done. Whenever I read from an official source that 'they cannot confirm' or 'have not confirmed' I immediately translate that to 'they do not DENY' lol!

Like the way you know a country is heading into recession the minute politicians start speaking up to say 'There is no recession'.

What you mean like when your President called the head of your church an embezzler?

Pride comes before a fall and their own opinion of themselves is the least reliable

If I had the time/inclination, I would analyse ALL their articles, but the few I've seen so far are not impressive. Even the aside they included at the end, which you mention further above, about Christofias opening the ports at Famagusta, appears to have been included to suggest acceptance/reliability of the previous (falsified?) points rather than as a separate and unlinked issue, which is what it is, in fact. Surely such a trick didn't fool you? :D

And do you know how boring and frustrating it is for you and your ilk coming out swinging with accusations the we want to deprive you of your rights,or we want to gain on your losses, every time we mention our fears, hopes and aspirations???? it is not going to work,my friend..We will not be intimidated...You are exhibiting the bloodyminded fanatical GC mentality : ONLY your human rights and your aspirations count... You didnt say it but that is what you meant...The TCs are just second class citizens who have no rights or aspirations of their own...They ought to be grateful they were allowed to live in their enclaves since 1963,and in their open prison which your unrepentand ENOSIS dreams and plots and actions have forced them into, since 1974...Your intimidation tactics will not stop us,TCs,from shouting from rooftops that we have been deprived of our human rights and of our country since 1963...Before that we were just seen as a nuisance that should just go away, even after hundreds of years of living on Cyprus...Our legitimate and justified fears and trepidations were nothing more than final death throps you loved watching with a vindictive smirk...Well,all you managed to do is to force us further and further into the arms of our Turkish cousins, and we now have no option but to blow in the big Turkish wind...Make no mistake about it...You and people of your mentality are responsible for the Partition of this island, and no amount of breast beating will change that fact...History will condemn you and the fanatical GC aspirations for Cyprus,as responsible for the final division of our country...Before that I will curse you every day I take breath, for depriving me of my childhood, and my homeland,of my human rights long before a single Turkish soldier had seet foot on the island...

Gasman, it will serve you much better if you paid more attention on the actual backgrounds of CF members before you make assumptions on what is their backgrounds. For instance, I do not have a church, because I'm not a GC, and even though I'm a TC, I do not have a mosque either.!

In any case, calling a priest an embezzler (if true) is a domestic matter and not an international incident, unless of course he called the Pope an embezzler.!
