State compensates family for man not missing after all
http://www.cyprus-mail.com/cyprus/state ... l/20101107

A COURT ruling awarded compensation to the family of so-called missing man Christofi Vassiliou Pasia, on Friday, after it was discovered that he was buried in the Lakatamia military cemetery all along.

Pasia’s wife was awarded €50,000 while his three children each received €25,000 following a lawsuit against the state filed in 2002 after his remains were located. His family sued on the basis that the state did not even do the minimum required in such a case, and if it had the discovery of his whereabouts would have been made a lot faster.

According to newspaper Politis, the judge handling the case, Fivos Zomenis said that until 1992 there was no real effort made to identify him, event though the evidence that was needed had been available since 1974. He explained that if someone had looked carefully at the evidence they would have discovered that Pasia was in fact killed in 1974 and buried in Lakatamia military cemetery. In the area where Pasia served, his commander had 18 dead soldiers and 18 were collected from the area and taken to Lakatamia military cemetery. Zomenis stated that if it was known where they were buried, which the state should have recorded, they could have looked for him within those 18 as opposed to looking for him among hundreds of dead soldiers.

Are they killed by Sampson men (EOKA or Coupists ) ?

God knows how many of them killed by Coupists in 1974 and buried with out informing .... more truths will come out ... it will come out but those people will not comeback again.

I hope we will get good lessones from all our past mistakes. No more mothers, childrens will cry...............

Both sides must apologise over the missing

Sir,
I have read the ordeal of the family suing the state for its role in the missing persons issue. I take the liberty to criticise the Missing Persons Committee and the political leaderships on both sides, for having taken so long to inform suffering families about the fate of their loved ones.

It is not only Greek Cypriots who have missing relatives. Turkish Cypriots experienced this agony and misery for many years since the 50s, 60s and 70s. Many Turkish Cypriots were abducted on main roads, from their villages, fields and even work places, like the one from Barclays Bank in Famagusta, and are still missing. Thousands went missing. Some have been traced and found in mass graves but many are still missing.

It is about time to inform families clearly about the fates of their relatives to end their hollow expectations and misery. This human issue should never be used as a propaganda gimmick by the Greek Cypriot politicians or Turkish Cypriot leaders. Let someone come out from either side and apologise for what happened in the past and help build confidence and trust between the communities for a peaceful future.

There are over one thousand five hundred missing GCs. If after the chaos of a coup, two invasions, thousands killed, raped and injured, then the forced movements of the ethnically cleansed 200,000 GCs and the ordeals to house them, even in tents, one mistake was made over one person, I think even the most cold-hearted Turk would understand. But not halil!

At least the RoC recognises the distress it caused with its mistake and has compensated the family. Let's see Turkey compensate for its "mistakes"!

You need not ask God because we already know every single one of the coup fatalities, so do not let this isolated incident create an excuse in your head for the horrendous Turkish Cypriot atrocities of July and August of 1974 when a whopping 5,000 disappeared never to return!

The inadequacies of the Cypriot legal system highlighted once again.

We have been denied Justice, by Brits and Turks, for decades. There's no end in sight.
