That's the 2006 figures so I expect a quarter of those in Greece to have returned by now!

As a matter of interest Get Real what would you say to the 'return' of those of the GC disapora (TC diaspora as well) to Cyprus ? Would those born or substantially raised in the multicultural societies they now live in be welcomed back with their multicultural cultures into a non-multicultural society you want ?

Like I’ve said elsewhere today, this multiculturalism thing doesn’t go down well for a tiny country like Cyprus.

Half baked Cypriots who follow Spurs and Arsenal and can’t really speak proper Cypriot isn’t Cypriot to me!

Could the nearness of Turkey have been a deciding factor?

It probably was your sense of humour.

Palio what do you want me to condemn

Start by condemning the ethnic cleansing of 200.000 Greek Cypriots and the illegal declaration of the "trnc" on our island. Are you going to do that? Or maybe you will give excuses as you always do?

You divided the island, not the Turks.

 We all know who always wanted a divided Cyprus. And we all know that the Turks will never admit any of their crimes against Cyprus. VP said that he would condemn crimes committed by Turks but he disappeared from the thread without condemning anything while you came up with some stupid excuse.

Invariably they risk a great deal, more often than not fail, and have to put up with racist ignorant crap from nationalists. This is true for Cyprus as it is true for every other country in the world.

A simple test is whether you would have done to others as you would have done to yourself. If you were in the unfortunate position of having to move to another country "illegally" would you wish to run the gauntlet of racist nationalist mobs on top of the experience of the lowest wages, precarious hold on employment and ever-present likelihood of being expelled ?

The racists nationalists of Cyprus speak the same language of ignorance of racist nationalists the world over. They are no more sophisticated than hoodlums and bully boys - they've got nothing to offer but thuggish violence.

No one is illegal.

You might have convinced me if I didn't know you were saying the above to excuse the stealing of our lands by the Turkish settlers you brought in Cyprus. Many Cypriots went immigrants abroad in the past and even now. They do it legally. It is clearly illegal to enter a country without the proper procedures.

Sotos,
I might take your comment seriously if you'd actually read what I've posted here over the years rather than your regurgitating your blind prejudices about me. I've consistently condemned nationalists and racists whether they're Turkish, Cypriot, Greek or anywhere else. You could even have read and properly digested what I wrote above that "A simple test is whether you would have done to others as you would have done to yourself." That is a test which is totally inconsistent with what you accuse.

And, moreover, I'm not bothered by so-called "illegal" immigration because it privileges nationality and nationalism above basic human rights. Most people who enter countries illegally do so because they have no option if they want to move at all. "I'm white and British and an ignorant scumbag" or "I'm Cypriot and Orthodox and a nationalist" does not result in a stronger claim to live in Britain or Cyprus than "I'm black and Muslim and want to make a living." Accident of birth is hardly a rational basis for claiming a right.

What you say could be true for some poor former colonies in Africa but not for Turks. Why do Turks spend their money on weapons so they can invade other countries and commit genocides and ethnic cleansing instead of spending that money to develop Turkey so people wouldn't want to abandon the country? Birth can be an accident but what you vote for is not an accident. Turkey is a democracy isn't it? Those Turks could have voted out their unethical regimes and replace them with much better ones. Also it is not accident that in Cyprus we have a good democracy and a good economy. We worked hard to make Cyprus what it is today, it was not an accident, and we even had to overcome the problems that the Turks created to us!
