Turkey joining the EU? Over my dead dog's body.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Don't be naive.

I've just had a look at the negotiation process, there's a clear table on Wikipedia at

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accession_of_Turkey_to_the_European_Union

Sure, Turkey has a lot of work to do but it's not impossible.

There are 35 Chapters to be fulfilled. Since 2005 only 13 of them has been opened, the other 18 has been blocked by France and Cyprus for various reasons.

So no, Turkey cannot just "join" when she meets the criteria, because she is being blocked, not because the East is poor, but because there are deeper issues with other countries who oppose her membership.

Even if the East was the holiday capital of the EU, Turkey would still be struggling to join, because the real problem is political, not economical.

This is why Jeremy is an ignorant prick, by pretending that the above does not exist and boiling the problems down to simple stuff like the hole-in-the-ground toilets.

Anyone is welcome to share his title by supporting his ignorant views, its fine by me.

Therefore the onus is on Turkey to get those chapters unblocked.

Cyprus has been working hard to accommodate Turkey and has offered a compromise to get some of those chapters unblocked.

As for France, that might all change at their next elections.

Compromise?

Bargain more like!

So it is a metter of perception.

Blocked chapters means it has nothing to do with Turkey's progression, unlike what that Jeremy Cuntson makes it out to be. Did I mention what an ignorant prick he was?

It is political and political can mean many things, things not necessarily in Turkey's control.

EU is not as square as you make it out to be. She has already proved that her membership does not rely on progression, but is used as a political weapon to maneuver other countries into what they think is fit.

Load of bollocks if you ask me, Turkey should just give the middle finger and tell them to go fuck themselves.

She is currently growing fast without the EU anyway.

Prior to JCs article on Turkey , or rather the dead dogs by the wayside did you have any opinion of him ? It seems to me that anyone that highlights some of the ugliness that exist in Turkey you are the first to condemn the informer as a ..prick, come of it mate this nation took bloody months to declare on the wearing of head scarves for crying out loud , the nation has a long way to go just to join the 21st century , I accept that ugly horrid things like honour killings only take place amongst the peasants but a recent survey carried out amongst University students showed that the majority were in favour of this barbaric practice !!! !!!

Source, please.

Sure , here it is : http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4357158.stm

Sorry Milti - "...almost 40%..." certainly isn't "the majority" by any definition..

I agree but where would you place these percentages : It questioned 430 people, most of them men. When asked the appropriate punishment for a woman who has committed adultery, 37% replied she should be killed.

Twenty-five percent said that she deserved divorce, and 21% that her nose or ears should be cut off.
I interpret that as at least 58 % in support of honour killings , unless of course you consider the 21% in support of cutting the nose and ears as opponents to honour killings !!!

Yes, in the mainly Kurdish city of Diyarbakır.

Would this mean that it is ONLY the Kurds who favour honour killings ?
I do not see any distinction made in any article on the issue that I have come across such as this one http://www.honourkillings.gn.apc.org/honour.htm
This article goes further in saying this : 90% of honour killings occur in predominantly Muslim nations. http://www.jihadwatch.org/2010/07/honor ... other.html

I could not possibly presume to comment on that, but please read the report properly. This was a study BY a university not OF university students but of men in the city of Diyarbakır.

You say that the survey is not recent , 5 years old ..... do you think the attitude of students would have changed by now ?

600,000 people died in Iraq because of the invasion which Turkey did not participate in.

What the hell are you on about mate!? Get a grip in reality.

The EU Enlargement council should ditch Turkey.

Cyprus should propose Israel instead! :D
