Top Turkish diplomat resigns ahead of EU talks
The diplomat responsible for co-ordinating Turkey's talks on membership of the EU has resigned after becoming frustrated at the slow pace of preparations in Ankara.
Murat Sungar handed in his resignation on Saturday (5 August) just two months before membership negotiations between the bloc and Turkey are officially scheduled to open.
In a statement Mr Sungar said he was quitting for personal reasons, but Turkish newspapers reported that he resigned due to uncertainty in Ankara about the EU talks.
Turkish Daily News said he had complained about "persistent uncertainty and confusion" in the country's preparation for the 3 October opening of talks.
