Two men electrocuted

Published on November 2, 2010

TWO Egyptian workers died yesterday after they were electrocuted while working on the construction of a greenhouse in the Dhekelia sovereign base area (SBA).
The two men, aged 22 and 23 years old were killed at around 11 am while trying to move the metal frame of the greenhouse with a forklift truck in the area of Vrysoules.
The frame came to contact with the high-voltage overhead power lines, resulting in the two youths being hit with 11,000 volts.
“Bases police went to the area and found two individuals – one was already dead while the second one still had a pulse,” Dhekelia SBA spokesman Andreas Pitsillides said.
An ambulance rushed the man, 23, to hospital where he died around an hour later, Pitsillides said.
The circumstances of the accident are being investigated by SBA police in cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus labour office. Both men were on the island legally.

Poor supervision? Poor foresight into what these people were asked to do? Put it all together with the recent "accident" and many other deaths and you will find that the Bases should be closed down for the general well-being of all!

That's a nonsense argument.

Roads are a necessary hazard, to get from A to B. Thousands of years old custom.

The SBAs are an unnecessary, dispensable, and expensive hazard which are proving a nightmare for the cash-strapped UK.

Peoples' lives depend on this ...

Besides, if you add up all the deaths directly linked to the presence of these SBAs, you might just find that the roads are safer ....

the fact this accident happened on the bases is not relevant , it was an industrial accident and I am sure the bases implement more health and safety than any building site in cyprus ....

Yeah, that was me! So they are finally being forced by the parents to investigate. That doesn't mean the SBAs are suddenly SAFE!
