...sorry, check again, Harper's government had the post withdrawn, ironically just before the Lebanon exodus a couple of years ago.

...i dislike this Prime Minister immensely, this is an example of his dim view of Peacekeeping, and Canada's role in efforts here in the Middle East.

So no Canadian Peacekeepers in Cyprus... Harper did it this time. Canada is completely withdrawn from the region and now irrelevant to the issues at hand.

Never liked Harper myself either... he has no balls for external politics, Canada lost the seat at the UN security council to Portugal a couple of weeks ago... Canada's image is fading away... We all know, following the big brother's (US) policies is a mistake to be paid dearly in the coming years.

The 1 billion spent on the G20 weekend was a fiasco afterall... what a waste of taxpayers money.

Isn't it strange how all the articles written about yesterday's fatal "accident" at the SBA only mention "accident" and none reveal the nature of this "accident" ....

For example:

Airman dies in accident in Cyprus after Afghan tour

An airman from 1 Squadron Royal Air Force Regiment has died in an accident in Cyprus while on his way back home from Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Defence said he died on Sunday from injuries sustained in an accident at an RAF base on 5 November.

Wing Commander James Hill said it was "particularly tragic" that he died while returning from a tour of duty.

His family has been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.

The MoD said the accident occurred in the Cyprus Sovereign Base Area.

Wing Cdr Hill, a spokesman for the British military in Afghanistan, said: "Despite the best efforts of the medical services at the scene, and afterwards, the airman did not recover from injuries sustained in the accident.

"It is particularly tragic that he died while returning home from a tour of duty that was dedicated to protecting his comrades and Afghan civilians while part of the Force Protection Wing at Camp Bastion.

I'm annoyed at the BBC for promoting the idea of this death as being "in Cyprus"!

Subtle!

Why didn't they just say "Airman dies in accident at SBA"?

Perhaps they no longer view the SBAs, as UK Sovereign Territory anymore ...

Are you suggesting that something is amiss here. Nothing too sinister I hope. Lets see where their enquiries lead them to. :?

MoD to investigate airman's death

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

An investigation has been launched into the death of a 19-year-old airman killed in a boating accident in Cyprus.

Senior Aircraftman Scott Hughes died in Cyprus on Sunday 7 November following injuries sustained in the accident two days earlier.

The Ministry of Defence said Hughes was struck by a powerboat operated by the Military Training Wing as his unit was undertaking decompression activities in the sea around Cyprus.

Hughes had just returned from a six-month tour in Afghanistan and died from injuries suffered in the accident. He had been due to return home on 6 November.

Hughes, from North Wales, served as a Gunner with Number 1 Squadron Royal Air Force Regiment.

Squadron Leader David Crook, Officer Commanding 1 Squadron Royal Air Force Regiment, said: "Scott was an extremely professional and brave young man who spent his last six months risking his life to protect and save others. His death is a tragedy and words cannot express our sense of loss and shock. Scott was fiercely proud of his regiment and we are fiercely proud of him. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten. Per Ardua."

Defence Secretary Liam Fox, said: "I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Senior Aircraftman Hughes in a tragic accident in Cyprus. He was returning home from what I understand to be a highly successful tour in Afghanistan where he demonstrated to his colleagues and senior officers utter professionalism, courage and natural ability for his role as Gunner. My thoughts go to his family and friends at this extremely sad time."

Two men electrocuted

Published on November 2, 2010

TWO Egyptian workers died yesterday after they were electrocuted while working on the construction of a greenhouse in the Dhekelia sovereign base area (SBA).
The two men, aged 22 and 23 years old were killed at around 11 am while trying to move the metal frame of the greenhouse with a forklift truck in the area of Vrysoules.
The frame came to contact with the high-voltage overhead power lines, resulting in the two youths being hit with 11,000 volts.
“Bases police went to the area and found two individuals – one was already dead while the second one still had a pulse,” Dhekelia SBA spokesman Andreas Pitsillides said.
An ambulance rushed the man, 23, to hospital where he died around an hour later, Pitsillides said.
The circumstances of the accident are being investigated by SBA police in cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus labour office. Both men were on the island legally.
