7 Years of European Membership! So where is the solution?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Penpoint/ Bananiot

The main benefit of having joined the EU, beyond economics, is increased security, as it would now be much more difficult for Turkey to start military action on EU soil.

From a political perspective, the RoC has unfortunately not even started using the EU card. TPap was unable to do this because of the need to manage the fallout from the 2004 "No" - whereby the US/UN trick and his own mistake of accepting arbitration pushed us in the corner. Christofias simply does not have the political will to use this card.

However, one must not forget that the ONLY reason Turkey now aknowledges the existence of the Cyprus problem is that she can NEVER enter the EU unless she first solves the problem in a way acceptable to a majority of GCs at referendum.

I hope that an intelligent RoC president starts using this card effectively going forward. At first stage, such a president should link any Turkey-EU negotiations with the monitoring & controlling the number of settlers and the exploitation of GC property in the north - so that time stops working against us in the negotiations.

At second stage, and if processes similar to the current one continue to fail, such a president should take the initiative and put forward a reasonable solution plan, which - based on polls, focus groups and research - is acceptable to GCs while still a BBF (which by definition covers all main concerns of TCs but would not include spoils of war e.g. 82:18 on territory).

He should then give Turkey and TCs a deadline for accepting it - after which, all discussions with Turkey at EU level would be blocked, the "green line" closed and legal action at all levels should be started etc. This is the only way to use the EU card to change the current abysmal situation and tell the world that this is not about 2 communities trying to re-unite but about good old-fashioned Theft and Piracy.

Secondly, the Island is still in Conflict and the EU is seen as now adding to it. And finally, how can a solution come about if one of the island's Guarantor powers is not an EU member Country. Exactly! There can not ever be a Cyprus Solution as expected by the EU and Greek Cypriots if Turkey is repeatedly kept in the cold on the matter.

The fact that Turkey is illegally occupying another sovereign nations territory has nothing to do with being left out in the cold?

Precisely! That's why Turkey is no longer a "Guarantor Power" but an enemy occupant which is at the foundations of the Cyprus Problem.

Mr Gregory,
I say this time and time again but the Greek Cypriots fail to understand, Turkey does not Occupy any part of Cyprus, thus they only provide additional security to the TRNC under the authorisation of the Turkish Cypriot Security Forces - Period. If Turkey were occupying Cyprus, Northern Cyprus would have been a part of Turkey after 1974, it wouldn't have declared itself a Republic in 1983, and the UN would not engage in Intercommunal Talks between the two Cypriot leaders and Christofias would not feel compelled to sit around the negotiating table. The EU made a mistake in 2004, and now the failure of the EU Parliament to endorse the Direct Trade Regulation after Greek harrassment will now lead the EU in adopting a new Cyprus stance - Partition. The Talks are now over and Turkey will take a step back with the world pointing its finger at at the EU for pushing Turkey away and then Recognising the TRNC. You guys are so blind it makes me laugh. You have now fused the Turkish Cypriots and Turkey more closer than ever before.

For the simple fact that Bananiot uses sock puppets. Obviously, in order not to look like a complete nutter...he created sock puppets so that somebody, anybody can agree with him.

More people than you'd like to know agree with Bananiot.

Not in the Republic of Cyprus, thank goodness.

I am simply an unapologetic GREEK CYPRIOT that holds his head high. That is why you have a problem with me and those that think like me. It appears you only get along with Turkish ass lickers. Speaking of which, Bananiot is as accurate as that crack head fortune teller two blocks up my house. I give you exhibit A:

BirKibrisli wrote:Those of you who keep on denying history, and wanting to reduce the Cyprus problem to one act of occupation starting in 1974 are doing Cyprrus a great disservice...You are blocking all the roads to understanding and empathy, hence ensuring there will be no solution in our lifetime...or any other time...Bananiot wisely can read the future as well...The new new world order has a big part for Turkey in the Middle East and Eastern Meditteranean region, and no outside power will lift a finger to help those fanatics hell bent on the Hellenisation of Cyprus...Time go get real indeed...Stop being bloody minded and vengeful against the TCs,agree to a livable solution fast to reunite our beloved homeland...The window of opportunity is very short, measured in a few years...miss it again, deluding yourselves with pyrric legal victories in meaningless arenas, and you are sealing the Division forever...The choice is yours!

My goodness, you spew the same drivel daily. The choice for peace is not ours to make for if it was up to us...we would have the Turkish troops removed and everyone would be able to live and work where ever they choose.

You and Bananiot are bloody hypocrites! You twits have a problem with the national guard acquiring sophisticated weaponry but have no problem with the National Guard acquiring Turkish "made" attack helicopters. I give you exhibit B:

http://cyprus-forum.com/cyprus31698.html

Again, you like Bananiot because he is a Turkish ass kisser...plain and simple. You believe you can only negotiate with Turkish ass kissers or there will be no solution in our lifetime because you won the war in 74 and we in the RoC must see the realities on the ground. Sir, go fuck yourself and your wet dreams about Turkey's neo Ottoman role in the middle east. Here are the realities i see:

The European Parliament Committee on Legal Affairs approved on Monday with 18 votes in favour, five against and one abstention the opinion of the European Parliament`s Legal Service, that the legal basis of the Commission`s regulation on direct trade between the EU and Cyprus` Turkish occupied areas is wrong and that the proper legal basis is Article 1(2) of the Treaty of Accession`s Protocol No 10 between Cyprus and the EU, signed in April 2003.

And don't ever talk to me about fanatics when you support holding a whole city in hostage as a bargaining chip. Are we clear?

We are clear all right...You have your head firmly in the sand, you are delusional, you cannot understand what people are saying,or you pretend not to..And you are on the path of delivering Cyprus to Turkey on a plate...I have no wet dreams about new-Ottomanism...I and a few others on this forum, including Bananiot, can see where the world is heading. I consider it my patriotic duty as a Cypriot to warn you...On the global scale, the economic and strategic balance is changing in Turkey's favour...
You can keep denying it and insult everyone who warns you about it all you like...It will not change the realities. If you insist on your fascist 50s Hellenic ideology of dominating and ruling the TCs,refusing to share power with them no matter what, you are simply playing into Turkey's hands, making the division along the present lines permanent...Once again,Turkey has no intension of joining the EU...She is using Cyprus to prolong the agony...The sooner you wake up the better...

after wwii the krauts surrendered to the brits (and other allied powers), not vice versa.

Krauts? You must be a GC. Erm... one little point - the Germans lost the war. What war has Turkey or the TCs lost?

If 1974 was a 'war' - I can't see how it can be said that the GCs were the 'victors'.

The TCs lost BOTH the 1963 and 1967 clashes and each time the Turkish airforce had to come in to save them from complete capitulation.

As for 1974, the TCs were BEHIND the front lines taking GC prisoners handed over by the Turks and executing them!

Now you tell me which war these losers have won....

You had Greek support as well, when we had no army, so shut up.

You were also behind the lines executing unarmed civilians (not soldiers) en mass and dumping them in mass graves, so shut up!
