EP COMMITTEE DIRECT TRADE

The European Parliament Committee on Legal Affairs approved on Monday
with 18 votes in favour, five against and one abstention the opinion of
the European Parliament`s Legal Service, that the legal basis of the
Commission`s regulation on direct trade between the EU and Cyprus`
Turkish occupied areas is wrong and that the proper legal basis is
Article 1(2) of the Treaty of Accession`s Protocol No 10 between Cyprus
and the EU, signed in April 2003.

The Committee rejected by majority the postponement of the relevant
discussion and endorsed the opinion of the EP`s Legal Service.

The decision of the Committee will be evaluated by the Conference of
Presidents, consisting of the President of Parliament and the political
group chairmen, in view of the political decisions to be taken on the
regulation.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded the
island.

The Republic of Cyprus joined the EU on May 1, 2004.

The government of Cyprus considers the direct trade regulation to be
legally wrong, since it would mean trade with the areas of the Republic
of Cyprus on which the government does not exercise effective control
and has declared closed after the Turkish invasion in 1974.

Lets be ready for the payment for this decision.Hopefully the pmnt will be less important than the direct trade.

The decision to join the EU was wrong in the first place.
It was taken, as you all remember, only to help solving the Cyprus Problem by inserting the obstacle of our Veto against the application of Turkey to join the EU. At the same time the EU would have been used against Turkey in the conflict since Turkey is occupying European ground after Cyprus entered.
We were in other words calling on "Big Mama Europe" to take the struggle into their hands against Big Mama Turkey" and all this under the auspices of "Big Mama Greece"
So where is it all gone? We are now negotiating with the Turks if they could trade in their own country....
Tis is all wrong. Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots are two terms used for discussions only...They ae ALL CYPRIOTS and thats the way we should all see it....the rest is simply jargon and poltical yogurt!

But at the same time Penpoint at least we have court judgments at a European level that establish the illegality of the actions flowing from 1974 etc. That is better than one government going at it alone with another foreign government. It gives more objectivity and it also highlights once again that nobody with a civilized legal system will recognise the illegally occupied Northern area of Cyprus.

One of the other big issues with opening up direct trade is that it will be Turkish multinationals and not TCs that would benefit.

The vast majority of money made from direct trade will go straight back to the Turkish mainland and line the pockets of Turks and not TCs.

well said penpoint!!!!!!!

it costs too much time and money to have guts and balls.......... so rather than spend it on a solution it seems its better to line the politicians pockets!!!!!!!!!!!

no one really gives a damn about a solution........ not even the cypriots, the ones that gave a damn are slowly but surely dying off and their kids are creaming it in by declaring to the world that the are refugees and claiming everything they can!!!!!!!

i know someone who was not even born in 74 and he classes himself as a refugee (cheeky), milking the system as much as they can forever!!!!!!!!!!

so in short....................FORGET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this way it suits a few countries (no names mentioned they know who they are) to have a divided country that they can play with at will!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i personally cannot see cyprus united as it once was, i remember how it was everyone would get on with each other.

now all people seem to do is show hate towards each other because the are either cypriot or a turkish cypriot.

they dont stop to think that all those years ago their families would have been neighbours, friends and even related sometimes.

i will say this with no regrets, my best friend is a turkish cypriot back in the uk and i couldnt ask for a better friend we went through so much together in our own personal lives a few years ago and i knew he would be there for me as so did he when he went through a rough time in his life.

so if people want to be bitter for the rest of their little lives, let them they are the ones losing out!!!!!!!!

but dont expect a solution anytime soon......... or if you are......... dont hold your breath!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
