A possible "Yes" on the Direct Trade Regulation?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

We can be second Las Vegas

Las Vegas has nightlife!

I take it you have never been to a casino here.

Gambling is the biggest "night life", it is 24 hours non stop party!

I take it you've never been to a real Casino...

I am not much of a gambler, but I do know that your cheesy night life ( which by the way, follows any EU trend from 10 years behind) does not go on for 24 hours. Casinos here do, you don't have to stop, ever!

Despite of whatever some CF regulars may say about Turkey not wanting to join the EU they so do and badly. Turkey is just a drive away from seeing what the rest of Europe is enjoying in terms of life style and standards of living. So they want to be part of it. Turkey being Turkey she wants access to something she has not worked for.

Secondly if Turkey integrates the occupied Cyprus into its economy I say good for her. She is paying for it anyway she may as well get something back. However, what does that mean for the independence of TC's? Once again I personally think that this is a great loss to that community, however, as I have said before they have brought it upon themselves and need to re-think their allegiance.

President Christofias will not compromise on the sovereignty of the RoC nor will he compromise the one international identity of the RoC.

Secondly if Turkey gains membership to the EU based on the EU principals of free movement the very least we will have is the right of all refugees to return and gain access to their properties. Everyone will live in Cyprus with their rights restored and we're all a big happy family.

You obviously have never been to Turkey, many people would prefer Istanbul to any EU capital. It really is a beautiful city. I love the way you want to make out EU being "hot shit" but really it isn't that hot, most of it is extremely dull actually, especially the new comers, they look no different to anywhere in Eastern Turkey.

On the other hand, if Turkey, as you claim, really wants to be a part of the EU, considering she already knows what she has to "do" in order to become a member, don't you think she would have already done it and entered?

Are you claiming that she wants to be part but is somehow incapable of for filling?

You have to be pretty naive to believe that things really are as black and white as you portray them to be.

So you've been to the TRNC then? Secretively!

If Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots can do all the beauty that can be seen currently in the TRNC with all of the embargoes and isolation, can you imagine what it will be like when those restrictions are removed!

Deep down inside Get Real you are hitting yourself, you are swearing at your country men for being stupid for their actions back in the day, for giving Turkey the opportunity to exercise her Treaty of Guarantee, for wasting time and then seeing Northern Cyprus go from a Federated state to the TRNC, to see it last from 1983 to today and going strong, even stronger now that we are know how much of a cheating double-crossing, back stabbing bunch of liars you Greek Cypriots are. And now, moving into the super fast technological age where there's no stopping communication links and the desire for self-determination based on the very Constitution your dumb Makarios signed in 1960, you will witness the greatest achievement of the island's history - a Two Republic partnership, one that is part of Turkey and the other begging Turkey to Open It's Ports!

How sad.....what a state you guys have brought the island to.

I pitty the Greek Cypriots and their hatred....shame!

MrH wrote:You make me laugh with how much of a Lack of understanding about EU affairs and the elements of the new Lisbon you have. Answer this: What happens to those Countries whom have Agreed and Support the DTR? What if Italy and Spain let's say Support the DTR? Well, according to the Lisbon treaty that has been stuck up your lack of understanding, THOSE individual countries will be able to establish Official Trade links with Northern Cyprus independently. You see my fellow compatriots, it is NOT the Vote that counts, but the MERE Fact that it's reached this level.

Actually I believe its you that requires a lesson in EU treaties. The Lisbon treaty if anything strengthened the entity known as the European Union. Prior to this the 3 pillar system existed which has now been abolished and the EU votes and acts as one entity. Therefore once a vote has been placed in the EU parliament for say Direct Trade with a village in occupied Cyprus and it has been rejected, the EU (as its own entity) has rejected it making it virtually impossible for a member state to contravene that decision.

I suggest you read up a little about how the Lisbon Treaty has changed the way the EU functions.

shahmaran: If Turkey is not interested in the EU membership why does she not declare it so the EU stops further discussions on the matter?

My God do the Greek Cypriots live in a dream world. Put it this way, it's a WIN WIN situation for us either way, but worst for the EU if they should reject it. How? If it's accepted and then the EU and Turkey will start on a new basis , while if it's rejected then Turkey and Northern Cyprus will know its position and the EU will be blamed for Partitioning the island. Period, it's that simple!

Lets simplify things for you so that you don't have all these options to consider because its adding a little more confusion to your logic. DIrect trade has not been accepted because it does not have a legal basis in the EU. The Republic of Cyprus needs to provide consent for trade within its territory because the "trnc" is not a 3rd party to the EU.

Turkey has already reacted to the rejection, its requested a few more chapters to open "to numb the pain", this doesn't seem like a country that wants out from its application process to the EU.

There's no need to panic and you're not accomplishing anything by winding yourself up so much. Try to discuss things in a logical calm manner and you'll see for yourself that things are not so dire.

The President of the island has already managed to arrange a meeting with Erdogan which can only be good news for the tc's as well. Let the 2 heads of state carry on the discussion from here and I'm sure that between them the right formula for the tc community can be found.
