Boron contamination in groundwater, any solution?

Postby georgios100 » Sat Oct 16, 2010 9:15 pm

I know this is a rather technical question but does anyone know of a way to get rid of the excessive Boron into groundwater?

Any equipment or water treatment available in Cyprus?

My brother had a well drilled (approx) 600 feet deep only to discover he could not use the water even for irrigation thanks to high Boron (borio) concentration. His well is at the base of the Stavrobouni mountain, neat Alethrico village. He would love to hear any info to resolve his problem (5,000 euros spent so far...)

Turkey has one of the biggest Boron reservoirs in the world, you should ask them

That's a deep well. Even so, you'd think with that initial elevation one wouldn't reach the salinated water table levels.

I think there were some grants from the EU (BOROMED) for desalinating and removing Boron, but I can't find any info at the moment.

Reverse osmosis crops up.

Sorry. I can't help in a practical way.

Nikitas is an expert, methinks ...

Thanks for the reply Oracle.

RO membranes may work but the PH levels must be raised to 11 (by adding acid solutions to the feed water). A rather expensive venture.

So I hear. Can't find any equipment (small scale) that can be used for local farmers...

Is the well legal? The rape of the island's aquifers is a serious problem.

wasnt Boron the reason Mediterranean water was difficult to disalinate, until an israeli company figured out how to remove it?

Boron is always tough to get rid of when desalinating seawater.

The process might be a bit easier when dealing with brackish groundwater. Here is a map of the contamination level in Cyprus (page 2)

the vast majority of boron in groundwater is located in the free areas of Cyprus, you can almost draw a line of where it ends and begins and it would almost follow the green line

It is interesting that the majority of the moron contamination has concentrated in the South, what is up with that?
