On corrupt European Commissioners over “Direct Trade”...

* Congrats to “James Shawcross from Oxford” for this great post…

“One has to question what certain European Commissioners were doing trying to use the Lisbon Treaty to bypass Cypriot objections by claiming that MEPs have now acquired powers over what the Commission considers to be a matter of international trade. An assumption that was highly questionable to say the least. No doubt the British government was one of the main backers of this disgraceful plan.

The sponsors of this proposal have shown absolute contempt for UN and EU resolutions, international law and for the government of Cyprus. They have also misled the Turkish Cypriots into thinking that they could upgrade their status into a Taiwan model and wasted valuable time and energy in the negotiations. All in all, one of the most shameful episodes in the history of the European Commission.”

I hope you sent your second sentence to the EU commission ......... Well said ....... however, a good outcome has been reached, unless the British want to further damage Cyprus. The Brits are real C_ _ _ S.

Very close to some of the earlier discussions on Hermes' thread. Good summation.

Whichever Commissioner proposed it should be shamed.

Clearly Hermes' role as a messenger is having some positive effect on influencing Joe Public.

Absolutely agree, well said JS from Oxford.

Outrageous that some in the Eu Comm (and dare say the usual trouble-makers in the GB Colonial Office) thought they could interfere in the Sovereign Affairs of a member-state. A matter of "international trade" my bum.

So once again this week and for the third time this year Public Policy outside Turkey is repeated, and that is to respect the Sovereignty of CY and to do nothing, absolutely nothing in the slightest, as per the UN Resolutions, to recognise the Illegal Criminal Regime.
