Cyprus is small and there are no economies of scale here for most products and competition is not as high. Also when you make comparisons for price purposes you should compare the exact same things. Two products can belong in the same category but be of very different quality.

when there was 1000 bakeries, bread was 50 cents

now that theres 5000... bread is 1.50

so when the supply exceeds demand... the businesses here dont get into price wars which eventually leads to some businesses shutging down and moving on, they just raise prices.

LIDL is a different story, and thats why i love it.

i agree wth you on electronics, in cyprus they are double the price. macbook pro in england that costs 1000 pounds in cyprus the 2008 model is 2.500 euros! for an older model! iphone 4 is 600 sim free in the uk. in cyprus its 1000 and it was 1300 the first few months both 32GB versions and sim free. hard drives external ones are double the price of uk stores. internet connections 4mbit for 50 euros or cable 10mbits for 99 euros per month. in england you get 50mbit for cheaper...

There are 5 times more stores because there are five-10 times more consumers. Hence the price hikes.
