Tell me where such a practice exists/existed and in which form? Because most scholars would tell you that the Ottoman Turks did/do anything but allow people to rule themselves or practice their religion, or to even use their own language etc! Yeah, they tax people alright!

I am very doubtful that you have heard the above from any credible scholar.

There are no ex-Ottoman countries. There were only regions of occupation by Turkic nomads which ethnically cleansed natives of thousands of years and the bulk of the regions is now called Turkey. Where I believe, Turkish is the order of the day (unless the EU is looking).

The creation of the Republic of Cyprus was not achieved by the Turks - quite the opposite!

It was the Greek Cypriots that created the Republic of Cyprus by freeing Cyprus from British colonial rule while the Turks worked for the colonial forces to suppress the struggle for independence!

Lets not rewrite history here!

This island was freed by the Ottomans, buddy.

Your entire socio-economic status and non-existent church was "upgraded" by the Ottomans too.

Last time I checked, the Greeks were rushing in from the Aegean, backed by their masters the Brits, to get a piece of the cake. Hoping to get back their long missed "Kostantinople"

Shame they had to go back from exactly the same place empty handed, followed by the disgraced Ottoman family

That is why they had to sit down and sign that treaty, instead of the Sèvres.

Basically they LOST the war, effectively so did the Brits.
