Im a Greek Cypriot Australian and...

Postby cyprusx » Tue Oct 12, 2010 10:14 pm

Hi im 21 and I want to go live in cyprus for about a year, but if i stay more than 3 months i have to go to the army, both my parents are cypriot. How long do i have to go the army for, i think its 6months?

this is from the gov website

REDUCED SERVICE FOR CERTAIN CLASSES OF OVERSEAS CYPRIOT CONSCRIPTS

Repatriated Cypriot conscripts who had their permanent family home abroad for a period of more than 10 years, are entitled to reduced length of service according to their age on the date of their settlement in Cyprus as follows:
Over 26-50 years old 3 months service
Over 18-26 6 months service
Over 13-18 12 months service
Over 10-13 18 months service

I could just leave after 3months but i think it would be good for me to see my country more and go to the army. can someone here tell my about the military servies, do we get weekends off, is the training really hard? will i regret going lol is the food good?

you have to go and sign up, they dont come searching for you so you could just not go, 21 you dont need adeia to leave cyprus either now. so you can avoid it and not go easily.

I totaly dissagree, i know of many people who were forced to go army, they dont go looking for you. they wait for you to leeve the country and when your at the airport the run your name through the COmputer and if they see u havent done your time in the army they dont let you leeve and ur off to the army.

proof? go ask the people in Nicosia who give the paper to leave (adeia e3odou), ask the police ask any one, the rule is you dont need permission to leave once you reach 21 :) i cant prove it but you can ask and they will tell you the same

This is the first time I've heard this also.

One of my (half-GC) nephews did his requisite 3 months with some Australian Cypriots and they had a good bond-making time, although a little bored at times as the "best" duties were given to Greek speakers.

Do you speak Greek?

No, he did 3 months because he was over 25. You will have to do 6 months -- that bit has nothing to do with the Greek-speaking.

Yes, he liked it and made some good friends. He spoke no Greek and so some things were excluded to him. You should be OK.

Have fun and be proud of yourself -- listen to your mum (she should have final say  ) -- and I wish peace and love to reign down on all of Cyprus so that my GC kin are safe from the nasty Turks.
