I really don't mean to cause offence here but why do some people go on Holiday just to drink?

And why is it 'cool' to get drunk? In Cyprus it's considered uncool to get drunk.

What a strange reply to perfectly sensible question!

Does anybody know the legal minimum age for driving in Cyprus?
Or smoking?
Or for having sex?
Or getting married?
Or buying lighter fuel?
Or driving a jet ski? (topical)
Or renting a 'X' rated video?
Or owning a shotgun?

Why do people go on holiday just to do these things?

And why can't I find a 'tongue in cheek' emoticon when I want one? ;-)

Hi chica and welcome to the forum :)

I am afraid I do not know the answer to your question. However given the lack of replies so far that do answer it I tried a quick google for you.

I could find no definative answer with a very cursory search. I did stumble accross the following - though I can not vouch for the accuracy of this information

In many countries in Europe and in Cyprus (where my husband is from and I have been many, many times) there is no drinking age law. Drink is included in life in an appropriate manner from the beginning. Children are allowed to sip drinks and no fuss is made. Teenagers may certainly have a beer with friends and relatives not just hiding out alone on a lake.

I don't understand your point, I go on holiday to a) relax, and or b) see my family. It's not relative to the first post, but I just don't see why so my English people have to go on holiday simply to get cheap drink.

If there is a law about drinking age it is not enforced.

The author of this thread didn't mention anything about getting drunk. He/She asked a legitimate question. What if the author only wants a glass of wine with his/her dinner? The author may be from USA, or Germany, perhaps even Holland or France. May even be a local. You have jumped to the conclusion that everyone that posts here asking questions about alcohol is a Brit who only wants to get drunk.

Thankyou Hazza!
I picked up on the notion that ChomskyFan had jumped to a conclusion without knowing any facts.
My post was a product of my wry sense of humour. Did you spot the reference to a tongue in cheek emoticon?. What if somebody came here and asked any of the questions in my post. Would he assume that they were coming to Cyprus to do just that particular activity?
Apologies if my sense of humour caused offence...

Being English I can only come up with the following.

We have developed over time a culture of drinking to excess. Not sure why as it is a little strange. You have to remeber though that the main reason for anybody drinking anyway is to get away from yourself. In the UK they have more to get away from. Weather, work environment etc.

I personally like to relax, a nice glass of wine in the evening just takes the edge off as it were.

It's an intresting point that now in the UK the drink culture is actually getting worse. Any main high street is now devoted to getting smashed in the few hours that we are permitted to do so. When the rules change (which I hope they do) then I'm sure (after an initial worsening) that it will get better.

In France mothers have red wine in one breast and white in the other. Children are raised with alcohol and there is no fasination with it when they get older! As I see it is here in Cyprus.

Anyway... cheers, Slainte, prost, salut, a chaim.......
