Nationalism....

Postby bsharpish » Sat Oct 09, 2010 10:45 pm

Do not confuse nationalism with a love of your country -

I used too, but no longer !!

A country is not the only thing which we owe our allegiance to -
It is also owed to justice, liberty and to humanity.

Real patriots strive for a country that is righteous, just, free and strong -
They don't just don uniforms, shout loudly, bully and wave flags.

Patriots are not just proud of there country ... they have a country which is proud of them.

Whereas-

History has repeatedly shown that nationalism longs for discipline, conformity, slavery and mindless obedience-
through which it creates despotism, usurps heroes and, in time, eats its own children.

Nationalism is a disease of the soul, the inhabitant of atrophied and impotent brains,
a companion and comforter of those who thrive on sectarianism , tyranny, fear, vanity and ignorance.

So - I'm not sorry if you are a self proclaimed nationalist and are offended and
shall now step down from my soapbox

Nationalist, Empire and Language, ...think about it.

like enclaves, these movements are exploited for a few who are highly organised having their own agenda; but they are not dirty words, they are made dirty.

there is no good reason to sacrifice your life for a country or a nation or state; only real enemies require this Grace. hatred like any emotion is a driving force, in social-exchange what matters is the fokus. Hunger, Ignorance, Disease, (an now the destruction of this planet's cycles) are real adversaries deserving such attention which as Persons we must choose to unite against for our survival. having distinctions there is a competition which can be exploited; this pride cometh fore the fall. diversity, the ethnosphere is threatened toward extinction at a greater rate than the ecology; this due to a denial, that as Humans, we prefer the easy exclusivities, obtained through plunder.

if there are BNP, ELAM, etc., there are forces that are their equal, this is the harmony of Natural Law.

it is the debate, the reason in which we seek our betterment which must change.

in Cyprus a love of country is no different, it is a closeness to the land, its smells, the trees, its nature that makes it so special. respect as a Cypriot is earned by your ability as a Steward to care for this beauty and it's relics, a history as yet unknown but older than the Pyramids of Egypt.

..."Greeks" and "Turks" would scoff at this idea; this is Nationalism in a most crude form, split by Language.

... rather than a Love of Nation, a greater Love of State as well, its Glory, the land.

It depends on how you define nationalism. I searched for definitions and they range from "nationalist - patriot: one who loves and defends his or her country" to "the doctrine that your national culture and interests are superior to any other". Most Cypriot nationalists fit the first definition because we just want to defend our country from foreign invaders. But nationalists of some other countries are mostly of the second type because they want to invade other countries to serve their own interests.
