Britain, the US and Switzerland should rank among the world's most corrupt countries, according to a paper delivered to an economics conference at the weekend. The failure of these and other developed countries to clamp down on offshore tax havens is responsible for more hardship than any corrupt acts by third world leaders, a leading tax expert said.
"I would place the United Kingdom high on the list of most corrupt countries," said John Christensen, formerly an adviser to the Jersey government and now director of the Tax Justice Network (taxjustice.net), speaking at the Economic Geography Research Group conference.
According to Transparency International, Britain is now more corrupt than Sweden, Luxembourg and Germany and former colonies like Australia, Canada and Hong Kong. But how has it come to this?
Postal ballot-rigging, partisan officials, censorship of candidates … no independent observer could call our elections free and fair
In my diplomatic career, I spent a great deal of time assessing the democratic merit of elections in various countries abroad. That gives me a peculiar perspective in looking at elections in the UK, and wondering what a foreign observer would make of them. I can do this also with the insight of having twice run as an independent parliamentary candidate.

OECD says Britain lacks the will to tackle corrupt business
Investigations into British firms acccused of bribing foreign companies are being hindered by a lack of "political will" to address the problem, according to a damning report by an international economic watchdog.
An inquiry by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) – launched in the aftermath of the Serious Fraud Office's decision to drop an investigation into BAE Systems over bribery allegations relating to a £43bn arms deal with Saudi Arabia, and other alleged corruption cases – concluded that reform was urgently needed to address "systemic deficiencies" in the legal system.
LEADING Church of England bishops have accused the British Government of being "morally corrupt" and delivered a damning verdict on Labour's rule.
Five of the church's most senior figures said the Government presided over a country suffering family breakdown, an unhealthy reliance on debt and a growing financial divide.
Corrupt British judges exposed in corruption and blackmail scandal
Judges in blackmail case face inquiry
Two senior immigration judges were facing a top-level disciplinary inquiry last night after highly sensitive details of their sex lives and illegal employment practices were exposed in a blackmail trial involving their Brazilian cleaner.
The Lord Chancellor and the Lord Chief Justice issued a statement saying that the public needed to have confidence in the judiciary and that the allegations against the judges were sufficiently serious for them to consider an inquiry into their conduct.
