And the result will be of more than academic interest. If Lord Justice Moses criticises the Government as trenchantly as he did in court, the case will not only finish in the House of Lords — pressure for reform of the corruption Acts will be overwhelming.

Britain is 'as corrupt as worst African states'

Britain, the US and Switzerland should rank among the world's most corrupt countries, according to a paper delivered to an economics conference at the weekend. The failure of these and other developed countries to clamp down on offshore tax havens is responsible for more hardship than any corrupt acts by third world leaders, a leading tax expert said.

"I would place the United Kingdom high on the list of most corrupt countries," said John Christensen, formerly an adviser to the Jersey government and now director of the Tax Justice Network (taxjustice.net), speaking at the Economic Geography Research Group conference.

Corrupt local town-hall bosses in Britain pay themselves bigger salaries than the Prime Minister

800 town hall staff earn more than ?100,000 - and council tax is going up

More than 800 town hall officials are taking home six-figure salaries, it emerged yesterday.

A survey found the number of local government officers paid more than ?100,000 has leapt by 27 per cent within the past year.

There are 132 council managers paid more than the ?137,579 annual salary of a Cabinet minister. The biggest earner was Peter Gilroy, chief executive of Kent County Council, who takes home ?229,999.

According to Transparency International, Britain is now more corrupt than Sweden, Luxembourg and Germany and former colonies like Australia, Canada and Hong Kong. But how has it come to this?

Exams system 'diseased' and 'almost corrupt'

England's exam system is "diseased" and "almost corrupt", says a former government adviser in a book on Labour's education policy.

A former director at the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, Mick Waters, says exam boards are conniving in the dumbing-down of school exams.

He also claims the boards profit from textbooks that help teachers with the answers to their own exam questions.

Exam regulator Ofqual said it would investigate claims of impropriety.
