In fact I just do not get it why you guys (both GCs and TCs) prefer to be primarily identified as nationals of so called "mainlands"? Take Americans for example. They actually fought against their "mainland"
(of course I'm not saying that you have to do the same or have a reason to do it) for their independence and liberty in order to be able to rule their own land and not be taxed and told what to do by the "mainland"
(and look how it turned out for them as a nation). And here are you fighting each other on your own land to stand apart from each other and to be identified as Greeks or Turks
(or be a kind of colony of either G. or T.) but not Cypriots first of all.
It kind of looks like you are fighting for slavery while Americans fought for freedom. How does it make sense?
And then, I do not know much about TCs & Turkish people relations but I heard many times from GCs how they are perceived in Greece as some kind of villagers with a funny accent. And how come you prefer to be identified as some kind of part of their nation and fight your neighbours (who live on the same island) at the same time? (I guess the same is likely true for TCs and Turkey)
I know that Americans who I've mentioned in my example are not very much loved in Cyprus (
at least not in RoC, due to commies' influence I guess), but come on there is something you can learn from them. There are all kinds of ethnic groups in the US and while they remember and care about their ethnic roots yet fist of all they are Americans and proud of it (how often you hear "american jew", "american irish", "american greek" or whatever?). Why can't you be like them and be Cypriots first of all and not TCs ot GCs? Put your ethnic origins out of politics (but keep it in other areas of the society of course) and establish the new single nation called Cypriots at last. (and make English the *primary* official language for goodness sake, anyway most of you speak it more or less. And no, I'm not English nor do I come from any English-speaking country. It is just the de facto language of business (and therefore prosperity). Take Singapore for example, with 70+% Chinese population it has four official languages and English is the primary one for official documents etc. And in fact the true free societies like the UK or US do not have a legislated official language at all. After all why should bureaucrats be able to enforce the language upon the people? It's people's choice what language(s) to use.)
Anyway there is no other way because if you keep going on as you do, keeping insisting being primarily GCs and TCs and not Cypriots, the only solution is the complete separation
(or it could be more bloodshed and subsequent occupation of the whole island by one of the "mainlands", which, thanks goodness, is extremely unlikely in the 21st century) which is also very complicated due to land/property dispute.
Come on, lower and put away all your Greek and Turkish flags until after you make the unification happen and hoist more of your national Cypriot flags.
