The Cyprus problem is a relic of the Cold War

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

The Cyprus problem is a relic of the Cold War

The problem in Cyprus is the result of the Cold War of the 60's and 70's...

Once the Turkish cyp side allows this fact to sink into their heads then the closer we are in reaching a solution. Taking away ones ethnicity whether its Greek or Turkish will not solve anything because the propaganda and brain feeding thats been endured by the Turkish cypriot
brain will want the Greeks to drop their religion also, and so on and so forth...

If you want a recap of history the 60's and 70's was the height of the cold war, and coincidentally the problems of Cyprus occured during these two decades. Anything and everything was used to incite these two ethnic groups on Cyprus. Turkish commandoes burning Tc mosques, The British with Major Massey training and arming Tc rebels, and the Greek Junta implanting fervent anti communist officers to lead the CNG. Not only did they lead the CNG but the junta officers who only 10-15 years before the 60's were fightning in the Greek civil war along side the Brits and Americans, and slaughtering suspected Greek communists, were forming the same organizations and military wings in Cyprus that they formed in the Greek civil war ie LOK. The LOk incidentally were the CNG army units that stormed the Presidential palace on July 15th 1974..ELDYK never took part in anything during the coup but actually stayed in their barracks until the Turkish invasion.

A description of LOK and how it was formed in Greece:

LOK squadrons were so successful against the communist insurgents that the Raider Forces Command was expanded to two brigades. Gamma Raider Squadron, also formed in 1949, was redesignated as an amphibious-capable unit in 1963, while Alpha Raider Squadron, disbanded at the end of the Civil War, was reactivated in 1968, and later re-formed as an amphibious unit in 1974, after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

A Z' MAK team conducting an urban assault exerciseIn the late 1960s, the Greek Central Intelligence Service (KYP), and the CIA became secretly involved with training and arming the Lokatzides. A tool of the KYP and CIA, a LOK detachment played a part in the coup d'état of 1967 by storming and securing the GES, the Army General Staff buildings at Cholargos, Athens.

Up to this day today the CNG is not under the command of a Greek Cypriot but under the command of a Nato Greek officer.. Of all the things the Turkish side complains about why have they never complained about this?

Fact George Papandreou sent into Cyprus 15000 Greek soldiers to guard against a Turkish invasion

Fact Turksih navy threatens invasion but retreats while the 15000 Greek soldiers are stationed on Cyprus

Fact Papadopoulous a Greek colonel with fervent anti communist roots overthrows Papandreou

Fact Papadopolos withdraws the 15000 Greek troops from Cyprus in 1967

Fact There are no intercommunal conflicts between the Greek cyp and Tc in 67 and until right after the invasion of Turkey in 1974

Fact Tc are beginning to return to their villages after their going into their self imposed canton

Fact Grivas is sent to Cyprus fronm Junta Greece to form Eoka B in 1971 to form EOKA B with the intent of overthrowing Makarios

Fact Makarios is supported by AKEL which represents over 40% of Cyprus' voters

Fact Makarios wants to keep his postion as Prez of Cyprus

Fact Makarios kisses up to eastern bloc and nonaligned countries ie: MAo, Nasser, Castro and Gandhi and Tito

Fact Kissinger calls Makarios the Castro of the MED.

Im sure all of you see the points, except the TC of course The problem of Cyprus at the time was not inherently an ethnic issue but the Great powers with their interests in mind.

Everyone contrived to prevent Democracy reaching Cyprus. Except Makarios; alone in his struggle!

Turkey's inference that it invaded Cyprus in 74 to save the Tc has as much credebility today as Bush saying he would invade Iraq for weapons of mass destruction....

In 1972, in an effort to increase the defense capabilities of the island, Makarios
ordered a supply of Czech missiles,17 declaring by this his disengagement from the Greek
military regime and its objectives for enosis, which he believed would change Cyprus to
a province-protectorate or a resort for the members of the coup. Since Czechoslovakia,
which had been under Soviet control since 1968, and many others wanted Makarios to
negotiate Cyprus’s acceptance into the Eastern bloc, there could be no better excuse for
the Western alliance to work for his deposition

Couldn’t the same be said for almost every country in the world given that they all pretty much have a “left” and a “right” political side?

sure it can but the tc and turkey are using the argument that it was an ethnic conflict which it wasnt, Cyprus has not used the cold war argument and keeps falling into the turk trap that a bizonal federation is needed to preserve the survival of the tc......if the cold war argument is used more effectively then the occupation of Cyprus becomes as antiquated as the Berlin Wall.
