Pirate Radio in Cyprus

Postby radiostephan » Sun Oct 03, 2010 11:29 am

Hi Ladies and Gentlemen,

I hope all is well! My name is Steve and I'm new to this forum so thank you in advance for having me!

I was last on the island in April and had a fantastic time, thanks for the hospitality!

I wondered if I could trouble you for a little bit of info?

I'm currently in the middle of a university project regarding pirate radio within the EU. Some nations within the union are very strict on the matter and are constantly looking to shut down these stations, some less so and are quite happy to leave them be as long as they don't interfere with other stations or broadcast inappropriate material.

I wondered what stance both the Republic of Cyprus and the TRNC take on pirate radio? Are the governments eager to close down such stations when they appear or are they pretty much just left on the air as long as they behave themselves?

I understand this is a pretty specialist subject, but if anyone can provide any information, that would be fantastic!

All the best to you all!

Steve.

First of all get your facts right! In Cyprus there is just one state and one government the Republic of Cyprus. The north part of Cyprus is illegally occupied by Turkish troops. In the free areas of Cyprus the last time I tuned on pirate radio station was about 2 decades ago when the only licensed stations were the state ones. Since then there are many private radio stations and no pirate ones ... unless we are talking about kids playing with transmitters that can cover a small neighborhood ... maybe such "pirate" stations exist but I never tuned on one in my home or while driving. And then of course there are the radio stations in the occupied part of Cyprus which are all pirate and illegal with no license.

Dear Sotos,

Thank you for the information. I know all about the Cyprus problem, more than most in fact, but I need to study both sides of the buffer zone for the work that I'm doing.

Does your country/EU recognize the "trnc"? I hope you can answer this question yourself.

I am just TRYING to explain that I need to make comparisons between both the EU side of the island and the non-EU side of the island.

The last thing I want is for this thread to start some sort of argument. If you can help me, then thank you and I'd love to hear you're input, if not, please save your thoughts for another time.

If you know then use the correct terms. If the base of your project is wrong then your whole project will be wrong. A pirate radio station is one which is not licensed by the authorities of a state. In Cyprus there is only one state which can give such license. If you ignore this and you instead adopt Turkish propaganda then your project will be false!

There is no such thing as a "non-EU side of the island". The whole Cyprus is part of EU but the Turkish army prevents legality to exist in the north part.

We are helping you pointing to you a major mistake! What you should do is to acknowledge your mistake, correct it, and continue with your research. If you are not going to correct this major mistake then why bother with anything else? It is like deciding that earth is flat and then trying to find the edges ;)
