New border patrols for EU; might keep out Turks.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

OK, Paphiti, this all sounds super, whats the cost??

How much does the RoC need for an effective naval facility?? We can then look at ways to achieve this.

The most expensive part would be the Satellites and the Fast Attack Craft.

But as I said, 2 Satellites will suffice and 3-4 FACs. FACs are only small and can be accommodated at Zigi, Latsi and Paphos

UAVs are dirt cheap, maintenance costs are low, and you don't need Pilots. And if one gets shot down or crashes, you will just go and buy a replacement!

Surveillance Aircraft are a bit more expensive! Dash 8 will cost about 30m Euros each, Super King Air (ideal for Cyprus) would set you back less than a quarter of that!

Over a period of 3-5 years, Cyprus can have all this operational by utilizing approximately half its annual defence budget.

Cyprus Guard continues to upgrade with Turkish threat

"We will continue with the same pace to upgrade the fighting capability and the operational readiness of our National Guard."

As long as Turkish troops remain in Cyprus, the National Guard will continue to upgrade, Cyprus Minister of Defence Costas Papacostas stressed Friday.

``As long as Turkish troops step on the sacred soil of our semi-occupied country, the National Guard will continue constantly to rearm itself so that it would meet the expectations of the Cypriot people and face whichever hostile actions on behalf of the enemy,`` Papacostas said in statements after a military parade to mark the 50th anniversary of the independence of the Republic Of Cyprus.

He added ``we will continue with the same pace to upgrade the fighting capability and the operational readiness of our National Guard.``
``We are in very good level but there is room for improvement,`` he went on to note.

Papacostas also praised the level of cooperation with the Greek National Defence Ministry, noting that the two Ministers have close cooperation and common concerns.

You have not won a single war against the Turks since the establishment of written history. What makes you think that you will win the next?

Precisely because you think we won't. Precisely because we have learnt a lot. Precisely because you sit on your laurels. Precisely because we have never had a war with "Turkey" but have sustained a series of unprovoked attacks, of your choice and timing, plunging us into a state of war, unprepared. None of your attacks have killed us; they only served to make us stronger, each time! Look at us now; we have over 60% of our country completely free of traitor-Turks. Just 40% to liberate. Siga, siga!

When we do eventually become the initiators to attack you, be certain it will be the end of Turkey as you know it. :D

Bu kari ben yokken iyice kafayi yemis

Ciracığı boş ver de gezdiğin yerlerden bahset. Yamyamlar seni yedi sanmıştım

Türkleri seviyorlar. Latin Amerika Forumu'na mı katılsam acaba sıkıldım rumlardan.

N. Karaböceği dinliyordum az önce. Eski şarkıları adeta Latin müziği gibi.

Sen keyfine bak da başkalarına boş ver.

Peki öyle yapıyım :) Allah senin de keyfini arttırsın. Aminnnn.

you are on the right track, but Cyprus needs to be self sufficient. There is little point relying on the EU or Frontex.

Apart from developing a small yet potent fleet of Fast Attack Craft armed with Exocet Anti Ship Missiles, Cyprus should start a Surveillance Operation utilising Mariner UAVs (FLIR Equipped) and backed up with Attack Helicopters, Fast Attack Craft mentioned earlier and also move to launch 3 Surveillance Satellites into orbit ensuring that one passes over every 3-4 hours.

Apart from that, all you need is a couple of Dash 8 or Super King Air aircraft equipped with Surface Surveillance Radar, and FLIR.

Now, this is all surprisingly cheap to set and it will not chew up much manpower. I believe this is vital for Border Protection, Law Enforcement, and will give the us the capability to patrol our EEZ and vital Oil and Gas Reserves.

Anything the EU/Frontex can offer should only be considered an added bonus.

Now that we have rich Oil and Gas reserves, I don't see how we can afford to not do this.

Paphiti, even Greece cannot patrol borders of EU by herself. Turkey will think harder before attacking EU patrols than it would Greece or Cyprus in isolation.

Of course you are correct to discuss civil defence. But Frontex can provide another method by cutting off directly the routes from Turkey to Cyprus which are used illegally by Turkey for colonising the island and arming her soldiers occupying Cyprus.

Sounds like a wet dream.

I do not think you get to call the shots about what goes on here in the North.

Tho I'd love to see you try

We fully understand Turkey is 'calling the shots' in the north of Cyprus and that is why it is called 'under occupation'. A non-democratic, human rights violating, dictatorial, military occupation; which is the problem of all EU countries.
