Solicitor faces £100,000 fraud charges

A Northern Ireland solicitor has been charged in connection with a £100,000 fraud in which a 94-year-old woman was allegedly cheated out of her home by her son and daughter-in-law, the Belfast Telegraph can reveal.

Co Down solicitor Ann Ervine allegedly falsely claimed to have witnessed pensioner Annie Martin sign over her Saintfield home to her son George Ignatius Martin and daughter-in-law Mary Martin.

3 UK Lawyers Charged in $7.6M Extortion Scheme re $54M Da Vinci Painting

Three United Kingdom lawyers reportedly are among a group of five men charged with conspiring or attempting to extort $7.6 million for the safe return of a $54 million Leonardo da Vinci painting stolen from a Scottish castle in 2003.

The theft made the FBI's top 10 list of art crimes and reportedly is the largest ever in the U.K.

"The men are accused of contacting a loss adjuster, whom they believed to be acting for the insurers of the painting, and stating that they could return the artwork within 72 hours. It is alleged they said the masterpiece would not be returned unless 2 million pounds [$3.59 million] was deposited in an account at Marshall Solicitors, formerly known as Marshall Gilby Solicitors, and a further 2.25 million pounds [$4.04 million] placed in a Swiss bank account," recounts the Independent. This conduct allegedly took place last year.

Investigators say he paid off Nigerian officials

A British solicitor accused of taking part in a scheme to bribe Nigerian officials to secure lucrative gas contracts was arrested yesterday.

Police arrested Jeffrey Tesler, 60, at a business address in North London after authorities in the United States requested his extradition and that of another Briton, Wojciech Chodan.

Prosecutors in the US have charged him with helping to dispense bribe money from a consortium made up of four companies to government officials in Nigeria to secure contracts worth more than $6 billion (£4.2 billion).

They are also seeking forfeiture of $130 million from the two.

Solicitor charged in connection with alleged Etape Caledonia sabotage

A solicitor has appeared in court in connection with the alleged sabotage of the Etape Caledonia at the weekend.

Lawyer and church elder Alexander Grosset was accused of scattering carpet tacks along the roads being used by 3,500 cyclists on Sunday afternoon, according to The Times.

Grosset is alleged to have shown complete disregard for the safety of participants in the Etape Caledonia event, as well as pedestrian spectators.

He was arrested on Monday evening at his home near Bridge of Gaur and appeared at Perth Sheriff Court the day after

Tack-row solicitor charged with sabotaging cycling event loses gun licence

A SOLICITOR charged with sabotaging a mass cycling event has had his gun licence revoked after being branded a potential danger to the public.

Tayside Chief Constable Justine Curran took away Alexander Grosset's right to keep firearms in the run-up to this year's staging of the event next month.

Last year's Etape Caledonia was marred by an act of sabotage that left hundreds of cyclists wADVERTISEMENT ith tyres punctured by carpet tacks.
