Bagis et al are begging the EU.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

The EU is not keeping Turkey from joining. The only obstacles to EU accession are of Turkey's own making. If Turkey follows the accession rules and keeps to its commitments, like all other applicant countries, then it would be well on the way to membership. These rules include normalising its relations with the Republic of Cyprus and reaching a just settlement on the island.

Turkey claims it wants to join the EU but it wants to join on its own terms. It wants to be an EU member and to enjoy all the benefits of membership but it wants to continue to occupy Cyprus. It doesn't actually think there is a contradiction in this position.

Because Turkey is refusing to fulfill its obligations to the EU, its accession process has ground to a halt. Instead of realising the door is wide open, Turkey is blaming the EU for blocking its progress and then accusing the EU of being anti-Turkish. In fact, Turkey is shutting itself out of the EU. Cyprus is a test of Turkey's commitment to EU norms and standards. Turkey knows what it must do but its just not capable of making a decision that would leave its bloody and belligerent history behind.

There is not a second country that has been kept waiting at the door of the EU.

As I recall, France/De Gaulle kept the UK waiting to join the EEC (no EU then) until France would benefit from them joining.

..and since they got in, all the Brits do is moan about wanting to get out, but instead they all left the UK to live in EU countries, because they could!

All of them! What? Even the BBCs? Blimey when did that happen? There were plenty left there when I moved to Cyprus. And I even saw quite a few in North London at the New Year (dotted around in amongst all the Charlies and BBCs!)

Have you ever been to the UK? Have you any idea of the size of the population (compared with this dot in the ocean)? The numbers of Brits in Cyprus is very small as a percentage of the UK population.

Unlike the number of Cyps who live outside Cyprus! That's quite a large percentage so I am told.

Great post ...... how about you forward it onto the EU Parliament online ... they then can pass it on to Turkey .... if it was my intellectual property I's certainly be doing that ..... they do take note .... I have had responses from them a year later but I got a couple lol

De Gaulle never entertained the idea that the UK joining the EEC would benefit the EEC or France. That is face-saving conjecture. Britain applied to join in 1961, a few years later than Turkey, which remains the longest running applicant.

Egemen Bağış, Turkey's chief EU negotiator, sought yesterday (29 September) to unblock Ankara's accession bid by calling on European Union countries to call referenda on the country's EU membership. Turkey may also chose to consult its citizens, he said.

Erdoğan has expressed Turkey’s disappointment over the slow pace of membership negotiations with the European Union and asked the EU to offer reasonable excuses for this situation as Turkey is already doing its part to adjust to the EU acquis.

“I want to particularly underline a fact here. That is the fact that our application to the EU dates back to 50 years ago. There is not a second country that has been kept waiting at the door of the EU.

The EU Enlargement Minister has replied to Erdoğan and Bağış :

"On the side of the European Union it should be 100% commitment (to) the rules of the game we have adopted when we decided on the mandate for accession," enlargement commissioner Stefan Fule said, speaking in Cyprus.

In case they still wonder why they have not been accepted :

"I don't think it is useful for any negotiations if in the middle of the game you start to question the rules," Fule told reporters in Nicosia.
