not only is Cyprus now a part of the most succesful ever union of nations but it also has
the protection of a soon to be the most powerful army in Europe
the heavy smoker who does not not see the benefits of membership but
can see the benefits of....smoking does not know his arse from his face !!!

I can see the benefits of joining a union which is effectively bankrupt... Germany is already printing DM...

The EU is a shambles... it costs each and every one of us thousands in bureaucracy... The most powerful army? You make me larf! They can't decide where the HQ is going to be - how will they organise a fighting force...?

But then I wouldn't expect you to be able to grasp that any more than you can grasp the simple fact that I don't smoke - even tho other posters have have confirmed it...

Then you do not comprehend the enormous severity that a collapse of the Euro or the EU would have on the world at large.
With such wide economic and perhaps some cultural diversities among member nations it is natural and understandable that problems would arise from time to time , the dealing with the problems is indicative of the strength of the EU foundations.
The EURO has taken some severe knocks over the last year and now with the economic almost collapse of the Irish banking system the EURO is dealing with the severity of it admirably. Let me give you some historical currency rates starting with the EURO vs STG and the US $ LAST YEAR ON OCTOBER 1ST.
TODAY : EURO = 1.153 OCTOBER 2009 1.097 REPRESSENTING A DRP BY EEURO OF 5%
AGAINST THE us$
TODAY EURO = 1.367 US $
LAST YEAR SAME TIME EURO =1.4539 REPRESSENTING A DROP BY EURO OF 6%
http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi?Amoun ... image.y=16

Based on above facts and remembering the disastrous Greek economic situation as well as that of Ireland , Portugal and Spain it does not appear that the EURO is under much pressure !!!
Learn boy and ..give up smoking !!!
And dont come up with such rubbish as this : "I can see the benefits of joining a union which is effectively bankrupt..."
I now name you officialy the Plonker of October 2010 !!!

Thus far it's been a calamity! We are poorer as we are Net Contributors, have been flooded by foreigners, and are slowly but surely turning into yet another European police state! Where are the advantages?

The EU doesn't have a military yet and EU law hasn’t helped Cyprus’ situation one iota!

You will have to make an application for residence as a "Third country national" if it collapses, or you could always become a "student".
