The restoration project of the N.Nicosia historical municipal market funded by the UNDP-Partnership for Future program was launched yesterday with a special ceremony.
Among those who attended the ceremony was the Head of the EU Commission's Task Force for TC's Andrew Rasbash, the UNDP’s Partnership for the Future Programme Manager Tiziana Zennaro, the Mayor of N.Nicosia Cemal Bulutoğluları as well as local shopkeepers.
The project, aimed at restoring the old municipal bazaar, (BANDABULIA) is planned to be completed by October next year.
Speaking at the ceremony, N.Nicosia Mayor Cemal Bulutoglulari underlined the need to restore the buildings surrounding the recently renovated Bedesten.
He said that it was his dream to transform the old town of Nicosia into a shopping and recreational district.
Also speaking the Head of the EU Commission's Task Force for TC's Andrew Rasbash said that he was standing in front of the beautiful Bedesten building, which until its recent restoration through EU funding, had been in a decaying state.
“Now these kinds of historical buildings are used to house cultural activities” he added.
For her part, the programme manager for the UNDP Partnership’s for the Future Program Tiziana Zennaro said that the aim of the restoration project was to renew the bazaar and to improve working and safety standards in the building.
She also said that the restoration would contribute to reviving economic activity in the area.
