A bi-communal event called “Media Mix” organized by the Cyprus Community Media Centre is to be held at the Chateau Status Grand Hall in the buffer zone this evening.
The event will bring together media professionals and representatives of civil society from both sides of the island. The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative and the Chief of Mission of the UN Peace Force in Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim will be delivering the opening remarks at the event.

The event, which will be featuring the premiere of the Centre’s press kit, high-energy showreel and brand new productions, is going to bring together Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot journalists and representatives from the civil society organizations.
“Media Mix” will start at 7.30 this evening.

I hope some of them will come together after these workshop and bring out new bi-communal paper and inform the public and world with balance and accurate reporting and directing the Cypriots public to help solving Cyprus problem for the benefits of the both communities.

Very true. The publishers will assert their influence and business interests when they can and pressurise the journalists to follow their policies. That's why it's so important for the reporters to establish a common voice through influencial professional bodies and/or unions.

A bi-communal paper - and broadcast media - would be a fantastic project. but it's all down to circulation and advertising and it's dog eat dog out there. If every writer did his or her bit to report accurately and never reinforce stereotypes against the other side it would help greatly. People are so easily influenced and manipulated by what they read or hear.

There was one bi-communal paper but did not live long. It was free to get it from the Check points... now i forgot the name of it . It was supported by EU but why it stopped now. I didn't remember it to ask while i was there why they stopped to publish the paper. I remember Resat Akar and Loucos Charalambous was writing as well in this paper. Also more GC,TC and English editors, also there was pages of information about Green line regulation also lots of information for third parties to get information for both side of the Cyprus(from public transport, restaurants, laws etc...etc...)
of course interviews from both side people, coming together, difficulties which they are facing and giving their own ideas how we can get over them.... it was a kind of bridge between both side and visitors also foreigners which were settle down at both side.

Addressing the event, the United Nations Special Representative and the Chief of Mission of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim said that civil society in Cyprus has the chance to promote awareness and understanding between the two peoples of the island by sharing more positive stories through their local media.

She said the Media Mix event is proof that solid partnerships have been established between the media and civil society from the both sides of the island.

She added that it was wonderful to see community media in Cyprus being utilized as a mechanism for information sharing and bringing the two peoples closer together.

In another joint speech, representatives from the bi-communal CCMC İlke Dağlı and Doros Michael underlined the importance of “objective journalism” in promoting understanding between Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots.

They also noted that the Collaborative Media Initiative, which operates under CCMC, is exploring the potential for collaboration between media from the two sides.
